As a newcomer I may well be missing something basic, can someone shed some light on this.
If you count the number of names on Dalkeith memorial there are roughly 173 names for WWI listed, but when I search on the CWG site, and using Dalkeith Cemetery as the search criteria and WWI, it only lists 18.
Can it be that so many are lost, never returned, I appreciate that some may be buried else where but its a large discrepancy .

Absolutely.
The bulk of those named on any memorial will not be buried locally. They will be buried overseas, or with no know grave at all.
Even where someone is named on a UK memorial, even if he died in UK, he might not buried local to that memorial if his family resided in Glasgow, say, or he died in England. A man could be on the Dalkeith memorial because he worked there, but buried in France or Perth.
There is no direct link between Dalkeith memorial, Dalkeith Cemetery and CWGC listing. The detail in " addittional information " on CWGC is that of the NOK some years later. The casualty might never have been there.
It is likely the 18 you found died after being medically discharged. _________________ Jim

Thanks very much for the replies, a very fascinating story .
Reading the story of the burial I can hardly believe it all took place where I stood taking the picture.
I recorded his memorial recently.

In my home town the number of local burials is 20% of the dead listed on the local memorial (12 out of 60 names). It includes those who died accidentally, of natural causes, or of wounds in the UK. It also includes 5 who died after 11.11.18

That's interesting Adam. As I said I'm not sure of my ground here but it does seem high. A quick look at the burials in Kirkcudbrightshire on CWGC does indicate that less than 10% is common and in some cases where the figure is higher there are a number of "non-local" burials where the men are not on the local war memorial.
Of the 16 CWG's in Kirkcudbright, for example, 5 were killed in the RMS Leinster sinking and their bodies were found in the Bay. _________________ Ken |

I would think a fifth buried at home is very high.
My local memorials have around 1/15 of the casualties buried here. On my local memorial, of 28 only one died at home the rest are overseas / missing. Another has 30 overseas / missing with one at home and one in Canada. Of 185 at Huntly 12 are buried in UK, most at Huntly. Seems your home town got off light by comparison. _________________ Jim
