Location, in Challoch (Episcopal) church churchyard at OS Map Ref NX 385 675
This is an original WW1 battlefield cross that has been placed in the churchyard as a memorial.

Wigtownshire Free Press (3/5/1918): Major (Acting Lieutenant-Colonel) FAW Armitage DSO (killed) was the younger son of Mr and Mrs Arthur C Armitage of Kirroughtree, Newton Stewart. Choosing the Army as a profession, he was gazetted to the West Yorkshire Regiment, October 2, taking part in an expedition to the North West Frontier, for which he received the medal. He was gazetted Captain on February 11, 1911. He served in France since December 1914, and was appointed Adjutant to the regiment on June 27 1915, served as Temporary Major, Duke of Wellington's Own, at the battle of the Somme, and was promoted Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel, 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, August 22 1916. He was four times mentioned in despatches, and was wounded in January 1916, and again in September 1917. |
