THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 17.08.1918
MEMORIAL TO COMRIE NATIVE

Recently there was unveiled in the Walthamstow branch of Clark's College, London, a tablet to the memory of Mr W.H. Sidey, a native of Comrie, the first manager of the branch, who fell in action in France in October last year. The memorial is in the form of a bronze panel, surrounded by decorative carving, and containing in the centre a photograph of Lieutenant Sidey, with a brief record below. Mr Button, the manager - himself of the "Old Contemptibles" - in introducing Mr Clark, the principal of the college, said that he had nothing better to say of Mr Sidey than that all who knew him loved him as a very gallant gentleman. Mr Clark, in unveiling the memorial, said that he would not but feel very keenly what was to him a great personal loss. "He was a good boy, was Sidey, and I was very, very fond of him. In 1913, when this branch was started, he was the first manager, and since then the Walthamstow Branch has never looked back. Early in the war Mr Sidey lost his brother, who was killed in action, and he felt this loss most keenly, and now too he has made the great sacrifice. But he has left behind him a good influence and a noble example. His friends and colleagues would miss his cheery presence, but would never forget his straight, clean, honest life".

THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 27.10.1917
COMRIE OFFICER KILLED

The village of Comrie has been deeply moved by the receipt of the news of the death from wounds of another of its promising young men, Second Lieutenant William Hepburn Sidey, R.G.A. He was the second son of the late Mr John Sidey, plumber and sanitary engineer, and of Mrs Sidey, Melville Square, Comrie, and was in his 32nd year. He was educated first at Comrie Public School, where he was dux of his class, and won three of the Robertson Bursaries. He pursued his studies at Morrison’s Academy, Crieff, and at Skerry’s College, Edinburgh. He was a member of the Comrie Parish Church Choir, and also of the Comrie Golf Club, being one of its most popular members and carried off several prizes. About nine years ago, Lieutenant Sidey proceeded to London to take up duties on the staff of Clark’s College. In this well-known institute his energy and ability soon secured him the position of manager of the Business Training College, and the headmaster of the high school for the boys and girls at Walthamstow, London. When he left last year to join the Army he was presented with an illuminated address and a gold watch suitably inscribed, as a mark of the respect and affection felt for him by the staff and students. Lieutenant Sidey was a young man of upright character, and a valued member of St. Columba Presbyterian Church, Walthamstow, in whose monthly magazine articles from his pen frequently appeared.
Major Green, R.G.A., has sent the following letter to Mrs Sidey:- “It is with the deepest regret that I have heard since your son was admitted to hospital that he has died of wounds. In my previous letter he had only just been admitted, but the wound was caused by a gas shell, and I am afraid he must have been affected by the gas also. There were six of my telephonists with him in the dug-out where the shell burst, and I am also sorry to say that they have all since died from the gas. I have been to his grave which is in a military cemetery, and I am having a proper cross placed up. The officers and men of the battery wish me to convey their deepest sympathy to you in your bereavement. In closing, I must say we have lost an excellent officer, who was loved by his brother officers and men, and he always did his duty thoroughly. Accept my deepest sympathy”.
Much sympathy is felt in the village for his widowed mother and other members of his family. Lieutenant Sidey’s youngest brother, Sergeant James Menzies Sidey, Rifle Brigade, aged 21, fell at the fierce and bloody Battle of Loos. Another brother was wounded in France while serving with the R.F.C., and is at present in England, and his eldest brother, who is married, is doing national work.
