Talk by yours truly at Gordon Memorial Hall, Castle Douglas on Stewartry War Memorials at 2pm this Wednesday. The talk is for the Stewartry Retirement Group but I am sure that it would be OK if anyone else is able to turn up.
The Gordon Memorial Hall is next to the Episcopal Church.

Paul
I've been offline for a few days and have only just seen this. I hope it went well today.
Kind regards

Just got back, I enjoyed it and got plenty of positive feedback and questions from the (appx 40) attending. Ken Morrison was there as well and kept me straight on the Dalbeattie and Colvend memorials.

Sorry to have missed out on this talk as well.
40 is a great number of folk to have for a midweek afternoon session. _________________

I included a section on lost local memorials and puzzles and got some interesting info on the Lochside Theatre stained glass windows and a lead on another memorial we don't have. I need to check these out but will post when I have info confirmed.

After Paul's talk I was lucky to get into conversation with a Mr. David Laidlaw who was the boy-hood friend and work-mate of Andrew Shennan who is remembered on a small plaque on Castle Douglas War Memorial.

They were installing power lines to local farms connecting them to the National Grid when they were called-up for National Service and posted to the 1st Cameronians in Malaya during the "emergency".
David was the Battalion radio operator throughout the effort to extract the badly wounded Corporal Andrew Shennan although it was some hours before he realised that it was his friend "Drew" who was the casualty.
A real gentleman, David wears his Cameronians blazer-badge with pride. _________________ Ken |
