Bit of an odd one and I am not quite why he should be a non-com but here is what I have from SNWM

Surname McLELLAN
Firstname Alexander
Service Number S/8279
Date Death 25/04/1917
Decoration
Place of birth Kirkpatrick Kirkcudbrightshire
Other 9th Bn.
SNWM roll THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS
Rank L/Cpl
Theatre of death F.& F.

The birthplace is likely to be Kirkpatrick Durham. No entry found in CWGC but SDGW has the same info as above.

He is listed on the Ringford and Tongland memorial along with his 2 brothers. His 2 brothers also died but I found them in CWGC.

An entry in the Stewartry ROH has - Lcpl, Tongland Bridge, enlisted Dec 1914, Gordon Hldrs, wounded sep 1915, DOW received in action 23 Apr 1917

I found no surviving service record on Ancestry and his MIC has no mention of death.

Finally the family gravestone in the Stell cemetery commemorates him along with his brothers but has the date wrong as 25 Apr 1916.

Thanks Jim, never thought of that spelling - any idea if we can get it changed? The only official thing I found with the correct spelling is what I have put in the mail, notably his MIC.

Paul

Am checking further into it.

Original register record shows McLennan.
Can you give the details of his two brothers?

I have cross referenced them both with the Stewartry Roll of Honour and SNWM to make sure they are the right men.

If you PM me your email address, I can also send the photo of their inscriptions on the family gravestone which shows names and dates of death (not yet posted on SWGP).

Incidentally, that address should be Tongland Bridge, Kirkcudbright.

Stuart

Thanks for the info, which also helps.
It does demonstate why news items cannot be used as sole evidence. His brother in the Seaforth was named Rowat, not Robert.
I am hopeful this one this can be resolved as his servive file survives and also confirms the name and address.

Well done to all involved here, it's a great result to get extra information against each name in the database.

Thanks
