This memorial covers the district around Lesmahagow.

Under the Coalburn section is this man who is also commemorated on the St Silas Church War Memorial in Glasgow.

Charles David Scott McKirdy is commemorated on this stone in Lesmahagow Kirkyard.

John Hamilton Barr – age 32 – Flight Sergeant (1366045) 172 Squadron, Coastal Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John had graduated with a B.Sc. Degree from Glasgow University in 1933 and was a teacher in Dalbeattie in September 1939. His Wellington bomber, equipped with Leigh Searchlight, was lost after taking off from RAF Chivenor in North Devon on an anti-submarine patrol in the Western Approaches/Bay of Biscay.
Born 1911 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Son of Alexander Hamilton Barr and of Barbara (Foggo) Barr. Husband of Anne McDiarmid (Anderson) Barr of Kirkbean who he married in 1939 in Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son-in-Law of Alford and Jane Anderson of Craigbittern, Sandyhills, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in action on 29 September 1943 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Windsor, U.K.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial, on the Colvend Parish War Memorial and on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour.
And on Hamilton Grammar School memorial.

JOHN CURRIE joined the 8th Bn Highland Light Infantry as Pte 7295, and went to France on 17 February, 1915, with his Battalion.

JOHN sustained severe wounds in action and was invalided back to Scotland.

JOHN CURRIE Died of Wounds on 27 October, 1915, age 19, at the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow.
His 'Usual Residence' is shown as Bellfield Terrace, Coalburn.
The cause of death is shown as:
"Shell wound of Pelvis & Lower Abdomen - 5 months. Scepsis & Necrosis; Excision, Emaciation & Multiple bed sores; While under influence of Chloroform. As Certified by A. Ernest Maylord, M.B.".
The Death Record shows that his father John Currie was residing at Bellfield Terrace, Coalburn.
A report from The Procurator Fiscal's Office shows the Cause of Death as:

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) entry for JOHN CURRIE shows that he is buried at Larkhall Cemetery.
There are 10 WW1 casualties buried at Larkhall Cemetery.

The Scottish National War Memorial (SNWM) at Edinburgh Castle shows that JOHN CURRIE Died of Wounds on 27 October, 1915.

The entry in Soldiers Died in the Great War (SDGW) shows that JOHN CURRIE was born at Larkhall [he was actually born in Rosebank] and enlisted in Coalburn.

The Medal Rolls Index Card (MIC) for JOHN CURRIE shows that he was awarded The 1914-15 Star Medal, The Victory Medal and The British War Medal.
His father John applied to the War Office to have his son's medals sent to him at 5 Croft Terrace, Coalburn.

The "Soldier's Effects" record shows that his Outstanding Pay of £10/15/11 was distributed as follows:
