The sun was very bright when I took these pictures and I struggled to get all the names clearly

JAMES AITHIE
James Aithie – age 31 – Private (43118) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a member of the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots and as Private (836) he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November but by August 1915 he had been wounded and evacuated home. After he had recovered he was posted to the 2nd Royal Scots in France.
Born 1886 in Cranston, Midlothian. Son of George and Elizabeth (Allan) Aithie of Fountainhall, Pencaitland.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

ROBERT AITHIE

Robert Aithie – age 19 – Private (1031) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert was a member of the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots and he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914 but he died less than three months later.
Born 1895 in Ormiston, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as Robert Thomson Aithie. Son of George and Elizabeth (Allan) Aithie of Fountainhall, Pencaitland.
Died of Wounds on 27 January 1915 and buried in Sailly-Sur-La-Lys Churchyard, France.

The brothers are also named on the Tranent War Memorial.


Wm. ANDERSON
Not listed by CWGC.
William Burnside Anderson – age 26 – Driver (T/025782) Army Service Corps.
In 1911 William was a ploughman,living with his family at Saltcoats, Gullane, Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. He enlisted in November 1914 but due to illness he was discharged from the Army in December 1917 and awarded a Silver War Badge (286616). William died of tuberculosis and meningitis in the family home in Pencaitland.
Born 1891 in Prestonkirk, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as William Burnside Anderson. Son of Robert and Ann (Burnside) Anderson of Manse Cottage, Pencaitland.
Died on 9 March 1918.

WILLIAM DODDS
William Dodds – age 20 – Private (1029) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots and he landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born 1896 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of William and Agnes (Burns) Dodds of Church House, Pencaitland.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1916 and buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, France.


THOMAS ELLIOT
Thomas Elliot – age 19 – Private (1696) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots attached to 16th Battalion.
Born 1897 in Borthwick, Midlothian as Thomas William Elliot. Son of the late Helen (Fortune) Elliot (died 1900) and of Charles Watson Elliot, and step-son of Elizabeth Bruce Ponton who married Charles in 1900 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 11 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


DAVID FAIRGRIEVE
David Fairgrieve – age 29 – Private (28459) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers transferred as Private (630542) to the 82nd Company, Labour Corps.
In 1911 the family were living in Pencaitland.
Born 1889 in Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of David and Christina (Smith) of Humbie, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Died on Active Service on 28 October 1918 and buried in Domino British Cemetery, Epehy, France.


DANIEL FERGUSON
Daniel Alderwood Ferguson – age 17 – Private (23009) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Daniel was an assistant cooper at Glenkinchie Distillery, Pencaitland when he enlisted in May 1915. He declared his age to be 19 years. He joined his battalion in October 1915.
Born 1899 in Pencaitland, Ormiston. Son of John and Rosina (Cassidy) Ferguson of Glenkinchie, Pencaitland, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 19 December 1915 and buried in Maple Copse Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Ormiston War Memorial.

PETER FERGUSON
Peter Ferguson – age 41 – Sergeant (49264) 7th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.
Peter was gamekeeper at Fountainhall, Pencaitland, Ormiston when he enlisted in the the 1st Sportsmen's Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He landed with the battalion as Lance Corporal (1156) at Boulogne in November 1915. He was posted to the 7th Battalion in December 1916.
Born 1876 in Gargunnock, Stirlingshire. Son of William and Isabella (Kennedy) Ferguson of Meiklewood Cottage, Gargunnock. Husband of Jessie (Scott) Ferguson of Ormiston Hall, Ormiston who he married in 1903 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 26 February 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Ormiston War Memorial and on the Gargunnock Parish War Memorial.

ROBERT H. GIBSON
Robert Horsburgh Gibson – age 20 – Private (1978) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert landed with his battalion at Le Havre in February 1915.
Born 1895 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Helen Paterson (Megson) Gibson (died 1895) and of Robert Horsburgh Gibson of Peaston Bank, Pencaitland, Ormiston.
Killed in Action on 18 June 1915 and buried in Chapelle-d'Armentieres Old Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Ormiston War Memorial.


JOHN GILLIES
Not listed by CWGC.
John Gillies – age 19 – Gunner (264238) Royal Field Artillery.
John was a coal miner when he enlisted. He died at his family home of acute malaria and black water fever.
Born 1899 in Edinburgh. Son of Peter and Isabella (Hannay) of North Lodge, Winton Castle, Pencaitland.
Died on 15 February 1919.

MAXWELL GORDON
Maxwell Gordon – age 24 – Private (383670) 916th Area Employment Company, Labour Corps.
Maxwell was at Boggs, Pencaitland when he enlisted as Private (1387) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in October 1910. He was mobilised in October 1914 and transferred to the 2/8th Battalion in March 1916. He was posted to the Labour Corps in September 1917.
Born 1894 in Pencaitland as Maxwell Porteous Gordon. Son of James and Isabella (Gray) Gordon of 17 New Winton, Tranent.
Missing in Action on 27 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.


ROBT. GRANTHAM
Robert Grantham – age 40 – Private (3620) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert was a coal miner when he enlisted in the Army Reserve in August 1914. He had previously served in the Royal Scots. He joined his battalion in France in October 1914.
Born 1873 in Stobhill, Midlothian. Son of the late Jane (Irvine) Grantham (died 1897) Husband of Joan (Fairgrieve) Grantham of 8 Beech Terrace, Pencaitland who he married in 1897 in Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 14 December 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PATRICK KEEGAN
Patrick Keegan – age 19 – Private (40320) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Patrick enlisted as Private (1386) in the Royal Scots and was posted to the KOSB in France.
Born 1898 in Pencaitland, Ormiston. Son of John and Catherine (Finigan) Keegan of Glen Kinchie Distillery, Pencaitland, Ormiston.
Missing in Action on 23 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Ormiston War Memorial.


JAMES LOGAN

James Logan – age 24 – Private (821) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a coal miner at the Woodhall Colliery, Pencaitland when he enlisted in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in May 1912. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November. He was evacuated home in January 1915 due to an ear infection which resulted in deafness and he was discharged from the Army in April 1915. He died of pneumonia at the family home in Pencaitland.
Born 1892 in Borthwick, Midlothian. Son of Isaac and Robina (Crawford) Logan of 15 Beech Terrace, Pencaitland.
Died on 21 June 1916.

WILLIAM LOGAN
William Logan, Military Medal – age 20 – Private (S/7308) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William landed with the 9th battalion in France in July 1915. Later he was transferred to the 1st Battalion and then to the 8th. William was awarded a M.M. in June 1917.
Born 1897 in Stow, Midlothian. Son of James and Janet (Walker) Logan of Dingleton, West Fortune, Athelstaneford, East Lothian and of Broomrigg, Pencaitland.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Athelstaneford War Memorial.


GEORGE MALCOLM
Thought to be:
George Malcolm – age 26 – Private (7288) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
In 1911 George was serving with the 2nd Cameron Highlanders in India. He landed at Le Havre with the 1st Battalion in August 1914.
Born 1888 in Ormiston as George Alexander Malcolm. Son of the late Rachel Washington (Bathgate) Malcolm (died 1895) and of Alexander Malcolm.
Killed in Action on 12 January 1915 and buried in Brown's Road Military Cemetery, Festubert, France.
Also named on the Ormiston War Memorial.


GEORGE MARTIN
George Martin – age 26 – Corporal (325415) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1891 in Pencaitland as George Winton Martin. Son of Thomas and Janet (Logan) Martin of Red Row, Pencaitland.
Missing in Action on 22 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


GEORGE McDONALD
George McDonald – age 36 – Private (M2/051245) Army Service Corps attached to the 5th London Field Ambulance.
George was the farm grieve at Lempockwells, Pencaitland when he enlisted. He went to France in March 1915 but became ill and was evacuated to Nottingham Military Hospital where he died.
Born 1879 in Cranston, Midlothian. Son of George and Jane (Cessford) McDonald of Polton Farm, Lasswade, Midlothian. Husband of Catherine Robertson (Dickson) McDonald, of Pathhead Ford, Midlothian and of Kidlaw Farm, Gifford, East Lothian who he married in 1903 in Crichton, Midlothian.
Died on Service on 27 October 1915 and buried in Crichton Parish Churchyard, Midlothian. (CWG)

James enlisted as Private (1027) in the 8th Royal Scots and was posted to the KOSB in France.
Born 1896 in Borthwick, Midlothian. Son of Nicol and Elizabeth (Robson) Nelson of 1 Trevelyan Place, Pencaitland.
Killed in Action on 15 September 1916 and buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, France.


PETER PUNTON

Peter Punton – age 19 – Private (325360) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter enlisted in Pencaitland and joined his battalion in France as Private (1389)
Born 1897 in Borthwick, Midlothian. Son of John and Margaret (Notman) Punton of South Side, Gorebridge, Midlothian.
Died of Wounds on 17 August 1917 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.


WM. ROBERTSON

JAMES SCOTT
James Scott – age 20 – Private (S/6341) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a farm servant when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was badly wounded and evacuated home in September. It was March 1916 before he was able to rejoin his battalion in France.
Born 1895 in Humbie, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Thomas and Eleanor (Scott) Scott of Middlemains and of Toll House, Pencaitland.
Killed in Action on 6 May 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.


JOHN SHIELLS
John Shiells – age 29 – Bombardier (83515) 293rd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Born 1887 in Cranston, Midlothian. Son of William and Mary Ann (Gant) Shiells of Ormiston. Husband of Mary (Bathgate) Shiells of 2 Black Friars Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1910 in Pencaitland.
Died of Wounds on 18 July 1917 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.

WILLIAM SMITH
William Smith – age 30 – Private (143410) Royal Air Force.
William was a coal miner when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed as Private (5224) with the 10th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders at Boulogne in July 1915. At some point he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and he was discharged from the RAF in February 1919. William died in the Edinburgh War Hospital at Bangour of post operative heart failure on a Gun Shot Wound. (Registered at Ecclesmachar, Linlithgowshire)
Born 1890 in Elphinston, Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of John and Marian (Kerr) Smith of Orchard House, Pencaitland and of Broomrigg, Pencaitland, Ormiston.
Died of Wounds on 31 July 1920 and buried in Ormiston Old Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Ormiston War Memorial and on the Elphinstone Village War Memorial.


JAMES VOY
James Voy – age 24 – Private (325142) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a miner at Woodhall Colliery, Pencaitland when he enlisted in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in March 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November. James died in the 39th Stationary Hospital at Aire-sur-la-Lys.
Born 1893 in Kelso, Roxburghshire. Son of Alexander and Elspeth (Waugh) Voy of Islay House, Pencaitland.
Died of Wounds on 23 April 1918 and buried in Aire Communal Cemetery, France.

JOHN DAVIDSON
John Davidson – age 33 – Sergeant (816099) 26 Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery.
26 Medium Regiment RA was converted from 26 Defence Regiment RA in September 1943. It served in North Africa, Palestine and Italy as part of the 8th Army. John died as the result of an accident.
Born 1911 in Pencaitland. Son of William and Jane (Gilroy) Davidson of 6 Trevelyan Place, Pencaitland. Husband of Jane Robertson (Gordon) Davidson of Tranent, East Lothian who he married in 1938 in Pencaitland.
Died on Active Service on 10 January 1945 and buried in Rome War Cemetery, Italy


WILLIAM HAY
William McDonald Hay – age 25 – Corporal (3191166) 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.
8th DLI landed at Normandy at mid-day on 6 June. William was killed four days later near the village of St. Pierre and was re-interred in May 1945.
Born 1918 in Pencaitland. Son of Duncan and Georgina (Shiels) Hay of Wester Pencaitland. Husband of Jeanie Hills (Matthewson) Hay of Berwick-on-Tweed who he married in 1943 in Berwick.
Killed in Action on 10 June 1944 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Chouain, France.


WILLIAM JOHNSTON
William George Johnston – age 26 – Lieutenant (299406) Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment) Attached to 1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)
Both the 1st and 2nd battalions of the West Yorks served in the Far East throughout the Burma Campaign, fighting in the British Fourteenth Army. The 2nd Battalion served with the 9th Indian Infantry Brigade from November 1940.
William was commissioned in November 1943.
Born 1918 in Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of David and Jane Elizabeth (Rae) Johnston of Spilmersford Mains, Pencaitland. Husband of Amy (Dring) Johnston of Liverpool who he married in 1941 in Liverpool.
Died of Wounds on 14 July 1944 and buried in Imphal War Cemetery, India.

ANGUS McLEOD
John Angus McLeod – age 30 – Second Lieutenant, Royal Indian Army Service Corps.
John was commissioned as (182401) in the Seaforth Highlanders in April 1941.
Born 1912 in Stenton, East Lothian. Son of John and Marion (McNeill) McLeod of the Winton Arms, Pencaitland.
Died on Service on 3 May 1942 and buried in Karachi War Cemetery, Pakistan.


IAN McLEOD
Ian Arras Macleod – age 23 – Sergeant (655221) 39 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Ian's Beaufighter, based at Protville in Tunisia, was lost during an attack on a formation of Ju52s near Elba, Italy.
Born 1919 at Croy, Nairnshire as Ian Arras Fraser McLeod. Son of Malcolm George Fraser McLeod and Helen Isabella (Milller) McLeod of 38 Boggs, Pencaitland.
Missing in Action on 24 September 1943 and named on the Malta Memorial, Malta.


JOHN McNEILL
John McDonald McNeill – age 22 – Trooper (7905661) 2nd Lothians and Border Horse, Royal Armoured Corps.
In August 1939 the 2nd Lothians and Border Horse was formed. In May 1940 the regiment was assigned to the newly formed 1st Motor Machine Gun Brigade as an interim move due to the shortage of Tanks after the retreat from Dunkirk.
Born 1918 in Gladsmuir, East Lothian. Son of Henry and Janet (McDonald) McNeill of 18 Boggs, Pencaitland.
Died on Service on 4 July 1940 and buried in Wadhurst (SS. Peter and Paul) Churchyard, Sussex. (CWG)


WILLIAM SANDS
William Sands – age 20 – Naval Airman 2nd Class (S/FX2215) H.M.S. Kestrel, Royal Navy.
William was the air-gunner and wireless operator onboard a Proctor Trainer of 755 Squadron when his aircraft spun into the ground at Evesham Place, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire when control was lost during unauthorised low-flying.
Born 1920 in Pencaitland. Son of James and Mary (Purves) Sands of Beech Terrace, Pencaitland.
Died on Service on 13 September 1941 and buried in Pencaitland Cemetery. (CWG)


JOHN TURNER
John Johnston Turner – age 21 – Sergeant (1682652) 178 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John's Liberator bomber, based at Amendola in southern Italy, was lost during a low-level supply drop to the Polish Home Army during the Warsaw uprising.
Born in 1923 in Kelty, Fife. Son of Valentine Clinton Turner and Grace (Johnston) Turner of 35 Trevelyan Crescent, Pencaitland
Missing in Action on 28 August 1944 and named on the Malta Memorial, Malta.
