Have we this memorial on the forum, I can't see it.

From the Glasgow Herald of 3rd December 1956

1918 War Memorial Unveiled

A war memorial erected at Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire, in honour of the men and women from the parish who lost their lives in the First World War, was officially unveiled yesterday by Mrs J. Telfer of Glencaple. Because of a disagreement among parishioners when the memorial was completed, it was never unveiled and no remembrance ceremony ever took place.

The memorial had become overgrown and hidden by trees, but early this year, with subscriptions raised in the parish, the trees were removed, repairs carried out, and the lay-out improved by a surrounding wall. The names of the Second World War dead were added to the east panel.

I think that will be the one at Bankend.

Caerlaverock is the parish name. Bankend is the largest village in the parish. There is no mention of Caerlaverock or Bankend on the memorial and it is generally known locally as the Bankend memorial (or the memorial at Bankend). Perhaps that is how the local disagreement started?

What could be the story here?
Very sad and possibly quite pathetic.

I've seen a few cases where a falling out has led to a second memorial being built but this is the first time I've heard of one being neglected.

At least 25 years later they saw sense and it looks well cared for now.

I guess it has something to do with Glencaple. This and the village of Bankend are similar sized villages in the same parish. Glencaple has no memorial of its own. The way the roads are laid means there will be little travel between the villages as each village will use a different road to travel to Dumfries, the nearest town.
