Since 1 March 2011 the new Officer in charge of the Scottish National War Memorial , Edinburgh Castle is Lt Col Roger Binks . He is the new Secretary of the SNWM at the castle and he has taken over from Lt Col Ian Shepherd who retired at the end of February this year after many years in that position at the castle.
Already Lt Col Roger Binks has helped me with a matter on the Index and he has corrected it with the assistance of documents of evidence to prove the correction obviously . I am sure that he will be another excellent person to continue the good work of Lt Col Ian Shepherd who helped me on a number of occasions with adding casualties to the index etc

Lt Col Shepherd gave a fantastic tour of the memorial to a group of us a few years ago. I wish him well in his retirement, and wish his successor well in his new role. |

As you may know Lt Col Roger Binks regimental secretary of the RSDG and Secretary of the Scottish National War Memorial at the castle edinburgh took over the part time post at the SNWM in May 2011 and already he has approved 3 casualties from WW1 on the index having correct death dates . ( provided him with Death Cert copies ). He has confirmed that he has had the corrections amended on the various indexes . Usually they wait until a next of kin points out the error but the facts are there so has corrected Three entries which is idea .
He has also approved a WW1 casualty on the Black Watch roll of honour that was only listed in the RAF showing previous service as well.
A good man to have at that office to continue the good work of Lt Col Ian Shepherd now retired fully.
Today I received an email from Lt Col Roger Binks thanking me for contacting the MOD webmaster and asking why the MOD had a link to CWGC website but not to the SNWM website so Col Binks has emailed the details to the MOD for inclusion on their offiicial website

Col Binks sent a message on congratulations, and wished us well when we formed the new Scottish Military Research Group as a society. A kind gesture which I wasn't expecting - seems a very nice chap. |

I still can't place him, but I am sure that I met a Colonel Roger Binks sometime in my military service. Not a common name so I guess it is him. If anyone speaks to him, could they ask if he is possibly ex RAPC?

Yes Col Roger Binks I would say is an excellent gentleman to have in that office dealing with matters such SNWM enquires and requests etc . He thinks like an Officer and makes a decision and as I said three WW1 casualties with wrong dates of deaths etc and he could have said Wait until some next of kin comes along and do it then but he dealt with it and did the correction necessary . Brilliant
