|
|
This started off as a query from Rev J Hopewell who was seeking information on the window in Fairmuir Church, Dundee.
Please see correspondence under that topic.
This is more information and a request from him.
PLEASE NOTE HE IS ONLY INTERESTED IN DOUGLAS HAMILTON WINDOWS.
" I have been in contact with the symposium and some of its members have been very helpful. I am at a stage now where it is more a question of local knowledge as I think I have exhausted most of the easily available published records and websites.
So far I know of the following war memorial windows by Hamilton:
Glasgow - Queens park Parish Church Strathbungo - the Jane Haining
memorial windows
Glasgow - Shawlands Old Parish Church (now used for worship by the
Destiny Church)
Glasgow, Drumchapel Old Parish church (made by Hamilton to a design by A Munro Neville - not strictly speaking a war memorial but see
http://www.strath.ac.uk/archives/cat/jhill/drumchapel.html
Fairmuir Church, Dundee
East and Old Parish church, Forfar
Rothesay High Kirk, Bute
St John, Largs
Alva Parish church
Troqueer Parish church, Dumfries
Zetland Parish Church, Grangemouth
Inverness West Church (now redundant?)
Cadzow Parish Church, Hamilton of which there is a lovely photo on:
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ptopic4078.html
Blackridge parish church
I have also trawled through the Google news archive and found another
eight war memorial windows, not necessarily by Hamilton. Its coverage
of the Glasgow Herald is rather patchy but if you go to:
http://news.google.co.uk/archivesearch/advanced_search?ned=uk&hl=en
type war memorial into the top line and Glasgow Herald into the line
marked source you may come up with all sorts of interesting information.
I was only looking for windows but there will be all sorts of memorials
reported there.
I also have a copy of the BSMGP directory of recent stained glass
windows of 1952, which features several Scottish makers, though sadly
not Hamilton. However, Douglas McLundie specifically notes his war
memorial windows so that might be helpful to you in your project.
I wonder if you could put out an appeal on my behalf to the members of
the project and see what turns up. You will get an idea of Hamilton's
style by looking at the Cadzow window. His figures usually have
overlarge eyes and hands. The war memorials frequently include Alpha
and Omega, the phoenix, the pelican and the agnus dei, and often have
the names of the fallen incorporated into the design. He signed some of
his windows but by no means all, so tracking them down is a question of
style and going back to church guidebooks, where possible, and kirk
sessions records.
Many thanks for your interest and if I can help you in your quest I am
happy to do so as I am sure you are happy to help me in mine.
Best wishes
Jeff Hopewell (The Revd)

There is only one war memorial window in Troqueer church, formerly in Laurieknowe Church. A picture of it is posted at http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=556 so I guess this is the one on the list?
