While researching my book, "Mayo Comrades of the Great War" I found a number of Irish lads in Scottish regiments on the CWGC site and elsewhere. As a reprint is likely in the near future have any of you come across Co. Mayo men who took part or who died in the regiments of Scotland. Would appreciate any info on them. I am new to this project and I consider it an honour to being a part of it now. P. J. Clarke. Sergeant.

Welcome to the project. I don't know if anyone would know if men in Scottish Regiments had Irish connections unless they had researched a particular memorial in detail and most memorials have not been researched to that extent. For example on my 'patch' of Dumfries and Galloway I have over 450 memorials.

Are you interested in men who served in Irish Regiments? You might have more luck with this yourself. For example on the Dumfries memorial there is at least one Royal Irish Fusilier

Regards

Paul

Hi Paul: Thanks for reply. I know that a lot of Irish lads were working in Scotland from the West of Ireland and some had joined up. When researching my book I got some Irish names in Scottish regiments, but sadly no addresses on the CWGC site, and on disc, and it's these men who might have got a mention in the local papers of where they lived, worked and joined up. The obituary of a fallen soldier is one of the greatest sources and this is why I asked people in this specific War Project for assistance. Remembering at this time: Lance/Sergeant John Martin Rooney, DCM. MM, 2nd Btn. King's Own Scottish Borderers, No. 13699, k.i.a., 26/8/1918. Born, Ballina, Co. Mayo, resided in Accrington.
Regards to all members. P. J. Clarke.
