Pte. M2/153812 William Gilmour Spalding was discharged from the A.S.C. M.T. on 17th October 1917 at Woolwich due to sickness. He enlisted 7th December 1915. He was aged 21 years 9 months and had served overseas.
This is all which survives. It is fairly likely he was discharged due to TB but there is sadly no record of this. Can you send me his DC ? _________________ Jim

Thank you Jim.
DC on it's way, sorry for the delay but didn't get notice of your post.
Interestingly the previous service number (M2/153811) was his brother James Fergusson Spalding of Market Square, Maxwelltown who was attached to 25th Field Ambulance (1/2nd Wessex). He served on the Western Front and was awarded a "Parchment Certificate and DCM"
The DCM award was announced in the L/Gazette 31/12/1918.
Oddly this comes from the Stewartry Roll of Honour where William and another brother Robert K. Spalding don't get a mention. _________________ Ken |

The death info does not assist in this case. It has to go down as one where no records exist to support a case. _________________ Jim

From the Edinburgh Gazette September 5 1919
M2/153811 Pte. J. F. Spalding, R.A.S.C., attd. 25th (I/2nd Wessex) Fd. Amb., R.A.M.C., T.F. (Dumfries).
On the River Aisne, on 27th May, 1918, when the enemy attacked in great force, he was in charge of an ambulance-car working between the main dressing-station and at advanced dressing-station at Gernicourt. He drove his car to and fro under heavy shelling between Gemicourt and the main dressing station, mending it when hit by shrapnel, thereby displaying great coolness and gallantry, and rendering invaluable service in the evacuation of the wounded. His admirable behaviour saved a large number of wounded from falling into the enemy's hands _________________ Ken |

I now have the Pension Card for this man, which states his discharge was due to TB - I think this means he could be put forward now.
Who has the other information for him? |

Got it, thanks. I'll check it against what else I have and look at submitting this to CWGC. |
