St. Anne's Cathedral Belfast has a memorial commemorating 16 QAIMNS & TFNS nurses who died during the 1914-1919 war. Whilst I can account for 15 of them I am unable to trace one:-

Staff Nurse Emily Gray, QAIMNS,Res. She is commemorated on the SNWM but I am unable to trace her as 'GRAY' or 'GREY' on CWGC.

I have to assume that as she is commemorated on SNWM she has a Scottish connection, does anybody have any information on this unfortunate lady please?

Tony

Only negatives to add I'm afraid.

I don't remember seeing an entry for her on a Scottish Memorial.

There is no Grey or Gray listed for QAIMNS, QARNS or TFNS on CWGC.

She is not listed on SDGW nor is there a MIC for her on Ancestry. There is an A Gray QAIMNS but the index is linked to the wrong image, which I have reported to Ancestry.

Thanks Paul

I will give it a couple more days as someone might spring a surprise if not she becomes a non-com.

I am a little confused. Apart from Emily Gray, for whom I have documentation on the way that may result in her commemoration. There are nine other Nurses on the Belfast Memorial that I have since discovered are also commemorated on the SNWM but with no obvious connection with Scotland:-
Staff Nurse Elsie Kelly Parker, QAIMNS of Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny.
Sister Mary Agnes Doherty,QAIMNS of Magheraflet, Co. Derry
Sister Rosa McGibbon, QAIMNS of Lurgan Co. Armagh
Sister Rachel Ferguson, QAIMNS ofMoneymore, Co,. Derry
Staff Nurse Elizabeth Grace Stewart QAIMNS(R) of Limerick
Staff Nurse Elizabeth Watson QAIMNS(R) of Dromore Co. Down
Sister Hilda Garlick TFNS of Dublin

Two others with no indication of hometown -
Sister Margaret Hessie Johnston QAIMNS
Staff Nurse Elizabeth Wallace QAIMNS(R)

The only possibility that I can see is that could have trained in Scotland.

Could they have served in a Scottish unit if there was such a thing in the QAIMNS?

Kind regards

Adam

I am not aware of exclusive national units and in Emily Gray's case she did her nursing training in Belfast and served in the QAs at Fargo Military Hospital, Salisbury and died in the Sisters Hospital in London so no Scottish connection at all in her Service Record.

When I have sorted out Emily's case for commemoration I might contact Belfast Cathedral to see if they have an answer but 90 years on will they know?

How embarrassing! I have just realised that I have referring to St. Catherine's Cathedral Belfast when it should have been St. Anne's Cathedral. I have edited the name in my initial post but I don't think that chages the name in the topic title, how does one do that??

I an sure these few ladies have some psychic power having their names put on the SNWM and changing the Cathedral's name in my head!

Tony

When you go into edit the first post you can change the text in the subject field too. I have done it for you in this case.

We're no further forward in solving the mystery though!

Thanks
