Situated in the grounds of Ewes Church at the side of the A7, several miles north of Langholm.

Perhaps my view of 'improvement' was that on a very wet and boggy day, this was the only memorial that I could get to and photograph without getting my shoes muddy again! Laughing

This War Memorial was ordered on 10/5/1919 by Richard Brown, Ewes Schoolhouse, Langholm from Beattie & Co Carlisle, on order No 2759 cost of £116.00. The Memorial is in grey scotch grantie and is over 11 feet high.The Memorial was unveiled on 25/10/1919 by Captain Scott-Elliott. All information from Beattie & Co Log Book, which I found on my vist in July 2010.

PTE. HARRY ARMSTRONG, GORDONS.
Harry Armstrong – age 22 – Private (S/13780) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Harry enlisted in 1915. He died of pneumonia and was buried in the Dury Hospital Military Cemetery. This former asylum building was used by British medical units until January 1919. Harry's remains were re-interred in 1927.
Born 1896 in Canonbie, Dumfriesshire as Henry Pass Armstrong. Son of John and Margaret (Davidson) Armstrong of Potholm Farm, Ewes, Langholm.
Died on Service on 9 December 1918 and buried in Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Somme, France.

PTE. DAVID BLACKLOCK, K.O.S.B.
David James Blacklock – age 21 – Private (2090 & 240613) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David enlisted in October 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He later served in Egypt and Palestine where he was badly wounded and evacuated to the 31st General Hospital in Port Said.
Born 1896 in Wilton, Roxburghshire. Son of Francis and Elizabeth (Telfer) Blacklock of Arkleton, Ewes, Langholm.
Died of Wounds on 24 May 1917 and buried in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

PTE. WILLIAM BOYES, K.O.S.B.
William Boyes – age 21 – Private (240740) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William enlisted in October 1914. He joined the 7th/8th KOSB in France before transferring to the 6th KOSB.
Born 1896 at Ladygill in Wiston & Roberton, Lanarkshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Hastings) Boyes of Townfoot Bar, Newcastleton, Roxburghshire. Missing in Action on 13 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton.

PTE. DAVID CAMPBELL, H.L.I.
David Campbell – age 19– Private (41708) 17th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
David was an appentice chemist in Langholm when he enlisted as Private (27070) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was posted to the HLI in France.
Born 1897 in Ewes. Son of John and Catherine (Bell) Campbell of Kirkstyle, Ewes.
Killed in Action on 1 April 1917 and buried in Savy British Cemetery, Aisne, France.

PTE. WILLIAM CAMPBELL, GORDONS.
William Campbell – age 21 – Private (S/13360) 8th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William enlisted in November 1915 and joined his battalion in Belgium in February 1916. He was killed by a bomb while on sentry duty in the trenches just over a month later.
Born 1895 in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Catherine (Bell) Campbell of Kirkstyle, Ewes.
Killed in Action on 30 March 1916 and buried in London Rifle Brigade Cemetery, Belgium.

PTE. JOHN DAVIDSON, K.O.S.B.
John Davidson – age 29 – Private (23836) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was living in Langholm when he was posted to the 1st KOSB before transferring to the 6th Battalion. He died of pneumonia in hospital in Etaples.
Born 1887 in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Son of Walter and Janet Carruthers (Coltart) Davidson of Torbeckhill, Waterbeck, Lockerbie.
Died on Active Service on 24 March 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Middlbie Parish War Memorial, on the Eaglesfield District War Memorial and on the Waterbeck Church memorial.

SERGt. JOHN FORRESTER, M.M., K.O.S.B.
John Forrester, Military Medal – age 24 – Sergeant (20080) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was living at Newcastleton, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in September 1915. Later he was transferred to the 6th KOSB and was awarded a M.M.
Born 1894 Brampton, Cumberland. Son of Robert and Isabella (Jackson) Forrester of Castleton. Roxburghshire and of Burnfoot, Ewes.
Died of Wounds on 2 October 1918 and buried in Potijze Chateau Lawn Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton.

PTE. THOMAS HOGG, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Hogg – age 22 – Private (23856) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1894 in Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire. Son of Peter and Jane (Little) Hogg of Burncleugh, Eskdalemuir and of Stennieswaterfoot, Westerkirk, Langholm, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, France.
Also named on the Eskdalemuir Parish War Memorial and on the Westerkirk Parish War Memorial in Bentpath village.

Thomas Irving – age 21 – Private (20247) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a shepherd living at Effgill Cottage, Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915 and moved with them to France in April 1916.
Born 1897 at Glendinning, Westerkirk. Son of the late Frances Jane (Cowan) Irving and of John James Irving, and nephew of Elizabeth Maxwell Irving of Steel Road End, Newcastleton, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Westerkirk Parish War Memorial in Bentpath village.

John William Musgrave – age 20 – Private (23317) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was living in Langholm when he enlisted.
Born 1897 in Kirklinton, Longtown, Cumberland. Son of Margaret (Musgrave) Middleton and step-son of John Middleton of Kirklinton and of 24 Market Hill, Wigton, Cumberland.
Died of Wounds on 6 October 1917 and buried in Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, France.

CORPl. ROBERT RIGG, GORDONS.
Robert Rigg – age 21 – Corporal (S/7257) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Robert was brought up near Langholm and was a gamekeeper when he enlisted there in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France on 16 February 1915 but died two months later.
Born 1893 in Ewes. In 1901 the family were at Culter in Lanarkshire and Robert's birth was also registered there.
Son of John (a chauffeur) and Isabella (Jackson) Rigg of Westerton of Mugdock, Milngavie, Glasgow. Grandson of Thomas Jackson of Bogfoot, Ewes.
Died of Wounds on 17 May 1915 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Milngavie War Memorial.

PTE. GEORGE SCOTT, BLACK WATCH.
I cannot trace this man.

PTE. WILLIAM SINCLAIR, BLACK WATCH.
William James Sinclair – age 23 – Private (S/3549) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William had been employed in farm work in the Eaglesfield area, in Canonbie and at Burnfoot, Ewes, Eskdale before he enlisted in Dumfries. He joined his battalion in France May in 1915.
Born 1894 Oldwall, Brampton, Cumberland. Son of George and A. Sinclair of Harlow Hill, Stamfordham, Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Died of Wounds on 31 December 1917 and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial and on the Eaglesfield District War Memorial.
