Normally when looking at a Great War Roll of Honour such as this, I expect to see a ration of survivors to those died of about 4 or 5 to 1 but in this case there are 85 survivors but only 5 deaths. The only explanation I can think of for this is that they included substantial numbers who did not actually serve in the Armed Forces, but that seems odd. 85 is not enough to be all the members of the lodge at the time which was well over 100. I have not found another Freemasons Roll of Honour to compare it with. Does anyone have an explanation?

All the following information from the minute books 1814-1993 - 1. on 6/2/1914 when having centenary Celebrations there was 235 acceptances to a dinner. 2. There were in 1900's over 300 brethren within the lodge. 3. of 14/1/1915 agreed to prepare and preserve a roll of honour of all Brethren who served in the forces. 4. On 27/11/1920 Professor Wallace unveiled the roll of honour. The framing done by a Dumfries firm after the Brethren turned down a style from an Edinburgh firm.
I understood from the secretary that the 85 brothers served and returned from the war with other 5 who died all brothers members of No 252 lodge.
