UKNIWM Ref: 44425
Location is St Margaret's Episcopal Church, New Galloway - OS Map Ref: NX 635 779
According to UKNIWM, the lights are Christ in the centre, Mary on the left and an unknown figure on the right. Anyone have an idea who it is? Presumably a saint, but is the book a clue?

I came across another plaque in the same church, very small, but very interesting. It is not a war memorial so does not qualify for an entry in its own right but the two generals listed are from the same family as this memorial (although I have not identified the exact relationship) and the accompanying explanation is well worth the read.

Perhaps because this memorial ended up in Ne Galloway because of a bombing raid in 1944 it can be considered a war memorial in its own right? It's better where it is though.
The older Honourable Arthur Percy Upton was a veteran of the Peninsula Campaign. He was born in 1777 and died in 1855. I got the following from the Wisden Cricket Almanack Archive!
http://content-www.cricinfo.com/england/content/player/22168.html
"Arthur Upton
England
Full name Arthur Percy Upton
Born June 13, 1777
Died January 22, 1855, Brighton, Sussex (aged 77 years 223 days)
Major teams Marylebone Cricket Club"
He was also an M.P. as well as a General.
Regards

I have just found out that the man's name was actually John Henry Upton Spalding (so Spalding not Upton) - something to do with the family having to add on the name in order to inherit the estate I think. I will change the title and in the list.

I've seen that for the Trooper lost at Little Big Horn and commemorated in Edinburgh. His name is John Stuart Stuart Forbes. The first Stuart is a middle name, the second Stuart is an addition to the name as part of an inheritance.

The third figure in the window is St John.
It was designed by C E Kempe and dates from 1905. |

This memorial record has now been generally updated, including the name change, on WMR/UKNIWM |
