Hello, just discovered the site today. Haven't had too much time to explore but it looks fantastic. Am currently researching my great uncle who was KIA with the 16th Cheshires in WW1, and is on the Kirkcaldy war memorial.
All the best,

Welcome to this great place Dave.
I'm sure there has been a book written about the names on the Kirkcaldy War Memorial. _________________

Welcome Dave, I hope you enjoy the site, watch out though it becomes addictive. I have transcribed the whole of Kirkcaldy memorial and think its the one of the most named memorials within Scotland. I would have hated to have written a book on 987 names for ww1 and 454 for ww2.

There is a book about the First World War names on the Kirkcaldy and Dysart War civic Memorials which was published a couple of years ago. It has short biographical details of all the names from the usual sources CWGC, SDGW, as well as notes of references to them in local newspapers.
It was a massive undertaking and I believe the intention of those who compiled it was to do the same for other Fife war memorials.
Unfortunately they are only looking at Great War names.
I have a copy and so does David McNay. If you let us know the name of your Great Uncle one of us can post the details from the book here.
Cheers

Thanks for all the warm welcomes, guys. I've only been looking into this subject for a few weeks and I agree about the addictiveness! I've had a lot of late nights getting carried away and not realising the time.
My great-uncle is Lance Corporal Alexander Christie, Service Number 21379, 16 Bn Cheshire Regiment. Thanks for the offer to look up his details in the book, look forward to hearing what's listed.
Can you also tell me the book's title and author? I think I need to try to obtain a copy. Family anecdotes say that he joined up (underage) with a couple of friends who served and died together. The 16th Cheshires were a Bantam Regiment which, as I'm sure most of you know, is an interesting story in itself as all the men were under 5'3" tall. |

I'm afraid I haven't been able to find my copy of the book yet. It's not where it should have been, I'll keep looking though.
In the mean time here are the details:
REGISTER OF THE FIFE FALLEN IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 VOL 1 : Kirkcaldy and Dysart Fallen

Entry from the book:

The St Brycedale church Plaque can be seen here.
FFP is the Fife Free Press.
FA is the Fifeshire advertiser.
The dates will be the dates of those papers were your relative is mentioned.
The entry does not contain the symbol which denotes a photograph in any of the references so it looks like text entries in the papers only. |

John - Many thanks for the link.
Adam - Thanks for that, have ordered a copy online.
David - Thank you very much. I'm intrigued by the Lewis gun section comment. Just when you think you've found out everything, another little nugget appears! |

It is, and has just given me an idea for a potential new section of the forum... |
