Garvald War Memorial
Location: Wall of Parish Church
OS Ref: NT 590 709

Garvald parish Church is situated at the East end of the village down some narrow roads. The plaques are in a prominent position on the south wall.

It's suffering a bit from the weather but there is some nice extra detail about those listed.

Spelling names &c., as publication.

Born Garvald but not listed here.
Not listed Arran, City of Glasgow Roll of Honour or elsewhere that I can see.
CWGC and SNWM disagree about his place of birth but he is a native of Garvald - born at West Hopes, Garvald, 4th. February, 1888 to James Stobie Johnston, Shepherd, and Alison Simpson who married at Edinburgh, 8th. June, 1877. (Details as Birth Register.)


SDGW - Born Garvald, East Lothian; enlisted Glasgow.
Service records exist for this soldier. (Signs his name Robert Stobo Johnston.) Commercial Traveller. Married. 26, Edgemont Gardens, Langside, Glasgow. Married to Mary T. Muir, 25th. June, 1914, Lanark, at which time his middle name is recorded as 'Stobie'. Why this later appears to become 'Stobo' is not known.
One child noted - James S. Johnston, born 13th. October, 1915, Glasgow.

B.E.F.:- 29th. January, 1917.
Died of wounds and Diptheria in 46 Stn. Hospital, Etaples.

PRIVATE WILLIAM BRUCE, MESSINES, 7th JUNE 1917.
William Bruce – age 19 – Private (42815) 8th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment
William enlisted as Private (166255) in the Royal Field Artillery but he was posted to the Yorkshire Regiment in France.
Born 1898 in Garvald. Son of John and Isabella (Swanson) Bruce of Garvald Mains.
Missing in Action on 7 June 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PRIVATE GEORGE BURNS, FESTUBERT, 11th MAY 1915.
George Burns – age 27 – Private (S/15496) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
George was a ploughman when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in Belgium in late March 1915 but he was killed a few weeks later.
Born 1888 in Whitekirk &Tyninghame, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late George Burns (died 1893) and of Elizabeth (Dickson) Burns of Snawdon Farm and of Townhead, Gifford, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 8 May 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PRIVATE DAVID DENHOLM, SOMME, 21st MARCH 1918.
David Denholm – age 20 – Private (31260) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Born 1897 in Whitekirk &Tyninghame, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of James and Helen (Blair) Denholm of Baro, Garvald and of Kirkland Hill, Whitekirk &Tyninghame, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


GUNNER ROBERT WATT GRAY, KALINOVA, 17th SEPTEMBER 1918.
Robert Watt Gray – age 33 – Gunner (72829) 138th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Robert was a carter at East Garleton Farm, Haddington when he enlisted in March 1916. He landed with his battery at Salonica in northern Greece in August 1916. Robert died in the 80th Field Ambulance and he was buried in the Kalinova Military Cemetery but he was re-interred in Karasouli in December 1920.
Born 1885 in Garvald. Son of the late James Gray (died 1914) and of the late Agnes (Watt) Gray (died 1902) of Garvald.
Died of Wounds on 17 September 1918 and buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece.

SEC.LIEUT. DAVID KINNAIRD, ARRAS, 5th DECEMBER 1917.
David Kinnaird – age 22 – Second Lieutenant, 26th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
David had been learning farming when he was commissioned from a Cadet to the Northumberland Fusiliers in May 1917. He joined the 26th Battalion in France in July but he was killed at the end of the year.
Born 1896 in Garvald. Son of Andrew and Marianne (Nisbet) Kinnaird of Garvald Grange.
Killed in Action on 5 December 1917 and buried in St. Martin Calvaire British Cemetery, St. Martin-Sur-Cojeul, France


PRIVATE GEORGE MCLEOD, HOOGE, YPRES 11th MAY 1915
George McLeod – age 18 – Private (S/15470) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
George was a ploughman when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in Belgium in March but he was killed less than two months later,
Born 1897 in Stenton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Simpson and Agnes (Gordon) McLeod of The Halls, Spott, East Lothian and of Gifford, Garvald.
Missing in Action on 11 May 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Spott Parish War Memorial.

PRIVATE ALEXANDER MITCHELL, YPRES, 3rd JANUARY 1915.
Alexander Mitchell – age 30 – Private (8786) 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
Alexander was a reservist who returned from Canada at the outbreak of war and he joined his battalion in France in September 1914. He was wounded and treated in hospital in Versailles but was able to rejoin his battalion.
Born 1885 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of the late James Mitchell (died 1912) and of the late Grace (McDewar) Mitchell (died 1908) of Kelloe Mains, Edrom. His sister lived in Garvald.
Missing in Action on 3 January 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

PRIVATE JAMES MITCHELL, ST. QUENTIN, 21st OCTOBER 1918.
James Mitchell – age 36 – Private (8634) 15th Company, Labour Corps.
James was a motor tyremaker in Edinburgh when he enlisted as Private (39269) in the Royal Scots Fusiliers and he was posted as Private (20929) to the Seaforth Highlanders in France before he was transferred to the Labour Corps.
Born 1880 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of the late James Mitchell (died 1912) and of the late Grace (McDewar) Mitchell (died 1908) of Kelloe Mains, Edrom. Husband of Jessie Denholm (Brown) Mitchell of Papana Cottage, Garvald who he married in March 1917 in Garvald.
Died on Active Service on 21 October 1918 and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, France.


DRIVER ADAM SPENCE, BRAY SUR SOMME, 25th SEPTEMBER 1915.

I cannot trace this man.


PRIVATE WILLIAM WELSH, WEYMOUTH, 31st MARCH 1915.
William Dickson Welsh – age 31 – Private (20731) 14th (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a shepherd at Snawdon Farm, Gifford, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian when he enlisted in February 1915. He was billeted in Weymouth, Dorset when he contracted spinal fever and he died in the Borough Isolation Hospital in Weymouth.
Born 1883 in Garvald. Son of the late Margaret (Dickson) Welsh (died 1889) and of the late Archibald Welsh of Gavald (died January 1915) Husband of Janet Peebles (Notman) who he married in 1911 in Garvald.
His second son William Dickson Welsh was born in August 1915 in Garvald.
Died on Service on 31 March 1915 and buried in Weymouth Cemetery, Dorset. (CWG)

1939 – 1945

MAJOR HENRY JOHNSTON YOUNGER, 1st LOTHIANS & BORDER YEOMANRY.
KILLED IN ACTION 12TH JUNE 1940.

Henry Johnston Younger – age 41 – Major (12994) 1st Lothians and Border Horse, Royal Armoured Corps.
Harry was educated at Winchester College and from December 1916 at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He was commissioned from there to the Highland Light Infantry in December 1917 and joined the 15th Battalion in France in April 1918. He left as a Lieutenant in 1919, and after taking his degree at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in 1921, he settled down in the family business in Edinburgh and became Director of Wm. Younger & Co., Wm. McEwan & Co., and Scottish Brewers Ltd. He had remained in the Army Reserve of Officers and in November 1938 he was appointed as Lieutenant Colonel of the Territorial 19th (Lothians and Borders Horse) Armoured Car Company, Royal Tank Corps. He volunteered to revert to Major in order to serve with the 1st LBH when it went to France in January 1940.
Born 1899 in Edinburgh. Son of Lt.-Col. William Johnston Younger and of Katharine (Richardson) Younger of Harmeny, Balerno in Midlothian. Husband of Anna (Marshall) of Baro, Garvald who he married in 1925 in Peeblesshire.
Killed in Action on 12 June 1940 and buried in St. Valery-En-Caux Franco-British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Winchester College War Memorial together with his brother, Laurence Richardson Younger – age 42 – Lieutenant Colonel (26346) Commanding 152 (The Ayrshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery who died 26 April 1943 in Tunisia and who is also named on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.


GUNNER JAMES DICKSON, R.A.
LOST AT SEA 18th JAN. 1942.

James Dickson – age 24 – Gunner (1738894) 195 Battery, 65 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
James and about 30 men of the 194 and 195 Batteries died when they were sailing from Alexandria to Malta on the Norwegian cargo ship “Thermopylae”. The ship was attacked and badly damaged by bombs from a German Junkers 88 but most of the lives were lost after the ship had been abandoned and during the rescue attempts by the naval escorts.
Born 1917 in Garvald. Son of Alexander and Sarah (Dawson) Dickson of Viewpark, Garvald. Husband of Cecilla Wintrup (Donaldson) Dickson of 3 New Houses, Garvald who he married in 1938 in Garvald.
Lost at Sea on 19 January 1942 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
