METHVEN
DEDICATION OF WAR MEMORIAL

The Methven War Memorial was dedicated in the presence of a large gathering on Sunday afternoon. The memorial takes the form of a cenotaph erected by the roadside at the east entrance to the village, while the ground in front of the memorial is enclosed by a low wall and railing. The names of the fallen are inscribed on a marble front on the cenotaph as follows:- “In glorious memory of the sons of Methven who gave their lives for their King and country in the Great War, 1914-1919:- Royal Navy - E.R.A. Robert Rankine; Scots Greys - Corpl. D. Smith and Pte. C. Smith; Scottish Horse - Trooper W. Strong and Sgt. T. Rodger; Royal Artillery - Sgt. F. Potter and Gnr. W. Allan; R.E. - Spr. R. A hymn having been sung by the united choirs of the two churches under the leadership of Mr Dan Murrie, the Rev. James Robertson, D.D., D.S.O, minister of the parish, thereafter on the invitation of Colonel Smyth offered up a dedicatory prayer, and subsequently made a few appropriate remarks which suitably voiced the feelings of the audience. The principal address was delivered by Colonel Smythe of Methven who said that a year or so ago at a public meeting in Methven a committee was appointed to carry through the erection of a memorial to these sons of the parish who had given their lives for their King and country in the Great War. The results of their efforts they saw before them this day. To them who knew and loved them no stone and lime memorial was required to keep alive in their hearts the memory of those they had lost, but for those that come after that cenotaph would show they they honoured and mourned those 52 men of Methven whose names were inscribed on that stone, who gave their lives that they should live. The Parish Council of Methven had consented to take charge of the memorial, and in the name of the committee he begged to hand it over to their custody. Mr Thomas W. Reid, J.P., chairman of the Parish Council, accepted custody of the memorial on behalf of the council. Pipers from Perth played “The Flowers of the Forest” and the “Last Post” was sounded by buglers, while the choir sang “Now the labourer’s task is oer”.

"Intimation of the death in action of Private William Scott, of the Scots Guards, has been received by his widow, who resides at Methven, Perthshire. His last letter was dated 12th December, and the formal intimation states that he was killed on 18th December. He had served in the South African Campaign, and had completed 12 years in the reserve. A brother of the deceased soldier was killed in action on November last, and two others are now serving in Kitchener's Army."

(Glasgow Herald 8th of Feb 1915)
"News has been received in Crieff of the death of Private William Scott, of the Scots Guards, who formerly resided at Methven, Perthshire. He had served in the South African campaign, and had completed 12 years in the reserve. A brother was killed in action in September last, and two others are now serving in Kitchener's Army."

There are no other men called Scott on the memorial. So perhaps his brother is on another memorial

The British Red Cross Society intimate to Mr. R. West, Burnside Terrace, Buchlyvie, in connection with his son, G. West, Royal Scots, who has been missing since the battle of Loos in September 1915, that they have word through a soldier in the same regiment and the same company that Private West was hit by a rifle bullet between the first and second line German trenches and the string probability is that he perished from his wounds.
