This Roll of Honour to those of Lunan Parish, who served from 1914-16 which now resides in Inverkeilor kirk.

I'm not sure what the crosses beside four of the names stand for?
Initially I thought they were casualties, but I can't find any of them on CWGC. Perhaps it's for awards, being missing, wounded or a POW?

There is a Roy Thomson of the South Wales Borderers from nearby Kirkden/Friockheim who was killed, but not til 1918.

James Brown and Alexander Wilson are on the Lunan War Memorial. James Brown was in the Seaforths however and didn't die until 1917.

The ROLL OF HONOUR - arbroath &district 1914-1919 published by T Buncle & Co arbroath has on page 67 :

PTE THOMSON BLACK WATCH & photo of this young boy aged 15 or 16 at that time :

PRIVATE ROY THOMSON, 5th BLACK WATCH , Was the only son of ALEXANDER THOMSON, grieve and his wife Barbara Mitchell , Red castle , inverkeilor . He was ONLY SIXTEEN years of age , and he had been a farm servant at West Drums , Brechin. He joined the 5th Black Watch in August 1915, and after about a year's training went to France . He had been only a few months at the front when he was killed in action on the Somme on the 3rd SEPTEMBER 1916 .

Strange that the Arbroath roll of honour book and the Lunan church roll of honour has him listed as ROY THOMSON but the CWGC and the SNWM have him listed as ROBERT THOMSON

From working on my own family history, there were a few 'Roys' in various generations - every one of them actually being Roberts.

I presumed from that, that it was a generally accepted 'pet' name for Robert.
