The memorial is situated on the North wall of Eaglesham Parish Church.

I was interested to see that there are more casualties listed for the Second World War than for the first.
Is there any particular reason? _________________ Help Save Our Red Squirrels

The only reason I can think it could be is that either the village expanded in size between the wars or that they widened the scope of who to include after the Second World War.
I'm afraid I don't have a definite answer. |

If memory serves me right Eaglesham was a major pit area. Is it possible that fewer men from Eaglesham went to the first world war because they were down the pit and Bevan boys did the work during the second.
Just a thought to add to the mixing bowl.

Eaglesham now falls within South Lanarkshire. If we have a tidy-up of the forum I will move it to the correct area but until further notice I will leave it here in the Renfrewshire section.

Unveiled on Saturday the 3rd of April 1920.
(Glasgow Herald 5th April 1920)
"The war memorial for the parish of Eaglesham, which has been placed on the outer wall of the lower part of the steeple of the parish church, was unveiled on Saturday. The dedicatory prayer was offered by the Rev. D. Langlands Seath, minister of the parish, and thereafter Mr William Browning, chairman of the memorial committee, introduced Mr Joseph Johnstone, M.P. for East Renfrewshire, who performed the unveiling ceremony."

I think the WW1 names may be in order of death?
Gemmell 23/04/1917
Hughes 24/11/1917
Maguire 11/10/1918
I can't find those named Newns of Perratt on CWGC. There is a James Perrat of Glasgow, but no Johns.

Anne posted the first named, Melville, as Loos casualty so it may help with identifying the others if it is date. It's not common but I have seen it elsewhere.

Thanks for that, I forgot about Anne's post there, Ah a Canadian too!
Melville 25/09/1915
Perratt 14/06/1916
Gilmour 15/09/1916
Gemmell 23/04/1917
Hughes 24/11/1917
Maguire 11/10/1918
Yeah, if you add Melville, Perratt and Gilmour to the mix you can see the chronological sequence.

Anybody have any information on Margaret Watt? Had her listed since thread first started.
