This is one of two civic memorials for Carluke. This memorial is much larger than the other and is located in the Old Churchyard.

Although it mentions the Second World War it records no names from that conflict.

Special Notes: The SNWM and the IWM incorrectly shows his place of birth as "Rockcarry" it should read "Rockcorry".

Born: Edragh, (Fachenvale), Co Derry (7/8/1869) Enlisted: Carluke, Lanarkshire, (28/12/14).
Age: 46 Date of Death: 15/11/1915 Cause: Died of wounds Egypt (Sustained Gallipoli).
Family Notes: Second son of Henry and Ann Duddy; husband of Catherine Duddy (nee Doherty), of 80, Kerton St., Carluke, Lanarkshire. They had ten children. Prior to enlistment he was a miner. He served on the Gallipoli peninsula from 6 June 1915.
Other Family Losses: Private Duddy’s eldest son, 17593 Pte William Duddy (born 1 March 1897) 12th Bn Highland Light Infantry, died of wounds on 25/4/17; he is interred in grave IV. E. 14,.Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.

"Sergeant William G. Harvie, of the Royal Scot Greys, was killed in action near Ypres on or about November 23. He was 26 years of age, and was the youngest son of Mr Alex. Harvie, Painter, High Street, Carluke. The news of his death was received in Carluke yesterday with much regret, as he was well known in the town. Sergeant Harvie is the first Carluke soldier who has lost his life. He was formerly employed by Arthur & Co. (limited) Glasgow, and was for several years in the linoleum department of that firm. Joining the Scots Greys he received rapid promotion, and as Sergeant formed one of the escort when His Majesty the King visited Glasgow in July."

The one in the cemetery with the WW1 names was unveiled on Saturday the 26th of June 1920.

The following soldier is named on this memorial. It should be noted that and Alex McMahon is also listed on the memorial; Private McMahon had a brother Alex who was born in Glasgow, at present I can not definetly connect them as brothers.

Religion: Presbyterian.
Other notes: Private McMahon’s Medal Index Card shows him as entering the Gallipoli Theatre of Operations on 2/7/1915.
Census notes: The 1901 Scottish Census shows the McMahon family (residing at, Engine Row Castlehill Hamlet Castlehill Bridge, Carluke) as follows; Alex McMahon (General Labourer, aged 40) and Eliz McMahon (aged 38 ) and their children, Christina (aged 16), George (aged 14), John (aged 12), Alex (aged 8 ) and Richard (aged 5). The 1911 Irish Census shows n Alexander McMahon (Farmer’s Son, aged 55), residing at, Crewmore, Poyntzpass, Co Armagh; he gave his marital status as married, but none of his family were present. He was staying at the home of his Aunt. Jane Hutchinson (aged 76).
Special notes: Whilst all the normal records show Private McMahon’s unit as “8th Bn. Highland Light Infantry” it should be noted that this unit did not serve overseas during the Great War.

Robert Lang, Private 37091 14th Bn. Highland Light Infantry, named on this memorial, was my grandfather.

He was born on 25 October, 1893, at Smyllum, Lanark.

His parents are:
Robert Lang, b 9 Feb 1853 at Lesmahagow, d 7 Feb 1919;
Elizabeth Telfer, b 25 Jul 1861 at Carstairs, d 14 Aug 1914 at Coldstream, Carluke. They were married on 4 Jun 1880, at Lesmahagow.

He married Sarah McQueen, b 19 Dec 1896, at Red Row Dalserf, d 13 Nov 1979 at Larkhall. They were married in Stonehouse on 2 Sep 1915.

His 'usual residence' on the marriage record is "Corehouse Farm, Kirkfieldbank".

He was killed in action on 24 April 1917, and is buried at Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France. CWGC Grave Reference VII. E. 10.

He is also listed at the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle.

I would be interested to hear from any other members who have a deeper knowledge of the background and history of this monument.

Robert Lang was born on 25th October, 1893, at Smyllum, Lanark, Lanarkshire.
His parents were Robert Lang, a ploughman, and Elizabeth Telfer or Lang, farm servant.
His parents were married on 4th June, 1880, at Auchenheath, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire.
His paternal grandparents were Alexander Lang, a ploughman, and Isabella Reid or Lang.
His maternal grandparents were Charles Telfer, a general labourer, and Elizabeth Tait or Telfer.

In the 1901 census, Robert, now age 7, was living with his family at Kilncadzow Village, Carluke, Lanarkshire. His mother was hospitalised at this time.

In the 1911 census, Robert Lang, now 17, was living with his family at Coldstream, Carluke, Lanarkshire. He is employed as a ‘Farm Worker’. His mother was again hospitalised at this time.

On 14th August, 1914, his mother Elizabeth Telfer or Lang, age 51, died at Coldstream, Carluke, Lanarkshire, after a long illness.

On 2nd September, 1915, Robert Lang, (age 23 on the marriage record), married Sarah McQueen then age 19, at Stonehouse, Lanarkshire. (He would have been 21 years and 10 months old at that time.)
His ‘Usual Residence’ as shown on the marriage record was ‘Corehouse Farm, Kirkfieldbank’, where his employment was a ‘Farm Servant’. He was working at the farm as a ploughman, as was his father.

On 28th January, 1916, a son Robert Lang (my father) was born at Braidwood, Carluke, Lanarkshire.

Robert Lang was 23 years and 5 months old when he died on 24th April, 1917.

(The Scotsman 28th June 1920)
"A memorial was unveiled in Carluke churchyard on saturday to the memory of the men of the parish who fell in the war. The monument, which is of Creetown granite, was subscribed for by the relatives of the fallen, and occupies a central position in the churchyard. An address was given by the Rev F.M. Hauxwell, minister of the parish, who paid a tribute to the dead heroes. The unveiling ceremony was performed by Mrs W. Stewart and Mrs M. Murray, who both lost sons."
