Lieutenant Frederick Guthrie Tait Memorial
Location:St John’s Episcopal Church, Junction of Lothian Road and Princes Street, Edinburgh
OS Ref: NT 247 736
Lieutenant Frederick Guthrie Tait was an amateur golfer better known as F G Tait. he was also a Regular Soldier serving in the 2nd Bn Black Watch and was killed during the Boer War in 1900.
This plaque commemorates F G Tait and his famous philosopher father Peter Guthrie Tait MA.
I wish I had a better image to post but hopefully someone else has a better one on their pc somewhere.
I will transcribe the F G Tait inscription.
"And also his third son Federick Guthrie Tait. Lieutenant, 2nd Black Watch.
Born 11th January 1870. Killed in action at Koodoosberg, South Africa 7th February 1900"

It looks like St Andrews in Scotland and Kimberley Golf Club in South Africa have adopted Edinburgh's Freddie Tait.
In St Andrews there are the following memorials
‘Freddie Tait’ is Hole 16 of the Jubilee Course, St Andrews, not the Old Course as stated on other web pages. Hole 16 of the Old Course is called ‘Corner of the Dyke’
The Freddie Tait Medal is played for annually at St Andrews, I'm assuming at the Jubilee course.
A street in St Andrews is called Freddie Tait Street
A ward in St Andrew's Memorial Hospital was named after him after a large sum was donated to the hospital fund after his death. See here
Kimberley Golf Club has
The annual Freddie Tait Putter Competition
It also has the Freddie Tait Museum opened in 1990.
In 2000 on the 100th anniversary of his death they held The Freddie Tait Golf Week
Also in South Africa is the
The Freddie Tait Cup given to the leading amateur in the South African Open Championships. It has been awarded since 1928.
Finally (although he may be listed elsewhere) he is also listed on the two Black Watch Boer War Memorials in Edinburgh and Perth

There are also a couple of memorials to him at the Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club, Lancashire- WMR 62604 and 62606.
They are a photograph and an annual golfing medal, respectively |
