A new War Memorial was inaugurated outside the church at Callanish on 2 September 2006. It is located at the southern end of the large carpark to the Free Church along the main A858 road through the village, about a mile from the Stones.

It is named East Loch Roag, as it covers the villages along the eastern shore of this sealoch, including Breasclete, Callanish and Garynahine.

The memorial consists of two panels with names, separated by a central penal with the crests of the four services (Army, Royal Navy, Royal Airforce and Merchant Navy).

Running directly above it is the famous line "At the going down of the sun and in / the morning we remember them."

Heading the memorial is the Gaelic phrase "Gus am bris an latha" (Until the Day breaks), a common phrase on gravestones in Lewis. It refers to the Resurrection of the Dead on the Youngest Day.

Is this a wholly new memorial or is it replacing one?

The memorial is wholly new; I am not aware of one being there before. In Lewis, the first memorial was the one outside Stornoway, which dates back to 1923. Local ones have only been erected in the last 20 or 30 years.
