GREAT WAR
Captain Andrew Currie Begg
Captain Andrew Currie Begg, The Black Watch, was a son of the rev. Dr. Bruce Begg, Fox Knowe, St. Fillans, and late of Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy, and husband of Mrs K. Smith Begg, Woodlands Ware, who, with six children, survive.
He was 36 years of age, and, before the war, was on the home staff of the National Bank of India, Ltd., Bishopgate, London, where he was highly esteemed.
In pre-war days he served as a Volunteer in the Black Watch, enlisting in the same regiment in November, 1914. In the following March he received his commission as second lieutenant in the 7th Battalion of that regiment, and in November, 1915, he was made adjutant with the rank of lieutenant, serving as adjutant with the 2nd Inniskilling Fusiliers for the month of December. By one of the ironies of fate he was gazetted captain four days after his death, dating from the previous June. He was killed at High Wood on 30th July, 1916.
His colonel wrote of him:- “He was a fine soldier and a very gallant and brave man, and, in the attack on the german trenches on the 30th, seeing men hesitating to go over the parapet, jumped up himself and led them on again and again against hopeless odds. His loss to me will be quite irreparable, and I can honestly say it would be almost impossible to find a better adjutant, and in the eight months during which he held that post I had learned not only to value his high qualities as a soldier but to love him as a man”.
