This memorial is only about ten years old. Previously, the plaque was attached to the village hall wall. When they placed it in its new setting, they took the opportunity to add a name which had been omitted.

The memorial is situated in a small garden next to the main road (A1087)

Robert Glass Amos – age 19 – Sergeant (1550957) 102 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Robert was a pilot on a Halifax bomber which had taken off from RAF Pocklington in Yorkshire for a raid on Aachen but the aircraft crashed near the target. He was re-interred at Rheinberg in August 1946.
Born 1923 in Dunbar. Son of Alexander and Isabella Porteous (Glass) Amos of West Barns, Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 14 July 1943 and buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.

William Archibald – age 18 – Private (14554271) 8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
The 8th Battalion landed in Normandy on 16 June 1944 and were in action to the west of Caen in July. William's death was registered in Southampton so it would seem that he was evacuated to hospital there.
Born 1925 in Whitekirk & Tyninghame, East Lothian. Son of Gavin Burgess Archibald and Helen Douglas (Dickman) Archibald of West Barns, Dunbar.
Died of Wounds on 4 July 1944 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)

William McLaren Dores – age 20 – Able Seaman (D/JX 223640) H.M.S. Niger, Royal Navy.
The minesweeper “Niger” was part of a convoy escort when in poor visibility she ran into the British-laid minefield off Iceland. Five ships from the convoy were also sunk.
Born 1922 in Dunbar. Son of William McLaren Dores and Margaret A. McLean (Thomson) Dores, of West Barns, Dunbar.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 6 July 1942 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

William Jowitt – age 19 – Trooper (14563845) 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps.
In late 1943, the 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry was assigned to the 51st (Highland) Infantry Division, where it served as the divisional reconnaissance regiment until the end of the war.
Born 1925 in Cramond, Edinburgh as William Henry Jowitt. Son of William Henry Jowitt and of Janet Marshall (Aitchison) Jowitt of Springfield Terrace, West Barns, Dunbar who had married in 1924 in Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 27 November 1944 and named on the Groesbeek Memorial, Netherlands.

James Nairn – age 24 – Leading Aircraftman (1372306) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James died of tuberculosis in the Military Hospital at Baragwanath, Johannesburg.
Born 1922 in Fogo, Berwickshire. Son of John James Nairn and Barbara Rathie (Coltherd) Nairn of South Belton, West Barns, Dunbar. Husband of Margaret (Goodhind) Nairn who he married in Leeds in 1945.
Died on Service on 8 February 1947 and buried in Johannesburg (West Park) Cemetery, South Africa.

Adam Peffers – age 31 – Corporal (3051813) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
The 2nd Royal Scots had been in Hong Kong since January1938. Adam was captured at the fall of Hong Kong to the Japanese in December 1941. At the end of September 1942 about 1800 prisoners and 700 Japanese troops were being transported to Japan when their ship, the “Lisbon Maru”, was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Grouper near Shanghai, China. All of the Japanese personnel were evacuated before the ship began to sink and many of the prisoners were shot as they tried to escape.
Born 1909 in Humbie, East Lothian. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Brydon) Peffers of Mainshill, Haddington.
Died on Service between 1 and 2 October 1942 and named on the Sai Wan Memorial, Hong Kong, China.

John Anton Rennie – age 27 – Pilot Officer (61260) 220 Squadron, Coastal Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John was commissioned from Leading Aircraftman (993113) in February 1941 and in April his squadron moved to RAF Wick in the north of Scotland to focus on attacks on coastal shipping and harbours in Norway. He was the pilot of a Lockheed Hudson when it collided with an Anson of 48 Squadron during take off from RAF Stornoway in the Western Islands. John was killed but his crew survived.
Born 1914 in Stockton, County Durham. Son of John and Hilda (Cowley) Rennie of South Belton, West Barns, Dunbar.
Died on Active Service on 8 August 1941 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)

Robert Penney Robertson – age 39 – Master, S.S. Effna, Merchant Navy.
The “Effna” was sailing from Baltimore to Newport in South Wales with a cargo of steel and trucks when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-108 south of Iceland.
Born 1901 in Edinburgh. Son of James Gullan Robertson and of Margaret Ann (Penney) Robertson of West Barns, Dunbar. Husband of Elizabeth Thompson (Fairgrieve) Robertson, of 32 Sighthill Terrace, Edinburgh who he married in 1929 in Glasgow.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 1 March 1941 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
(Not named on the Dunbar Memorial)

I cannot trace personal details for this man. CWGC has:
Robert Young, Private (S/107937) Royal Army Service Corps.
Died on 4 October 1940 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)

The added name plaque is for
Hugh Hume – age 41 – Aircraftman 1st Class (1554179) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Hugh had been a greenkeeper in Dunbar before he enlisted. He died of tuberculosis in Bangour Hospital, Uphall, West Lothian.
Born 1904 in Edinburgh. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Tennent) Hume formerly of North Berwick. Husband of Robina (Doyle or Scott) Hume of West Barns, Dunbar who he married in 1936 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 13 October 1945 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)
