Carmyllie - Angus District

The Carmyllie war memorial is a rustic grey granite obelisk set on a tapering pedestal which in turn rests on a rustic square plinth. The obelisk has a celtic cross with wheel-head carved in relief on the upper face, and the commemoration and names of the dead are set in lead lettering on dressed panels on the lower face of the obelisk and the pedestal. The monumental sculptor was G. Carnegie of Dundee.
The monument stands within a raised and partly enclosed area in gardens by the roadside.

This memorial was unveiled during April 1920 in a service of dedication by Col. Ouchterlony of The Guynd.

James Cowie on this memorial should be listed as a Black Watch soldier, not a Gordon Highlander. He is listed on the Forfar Roll of Honour, Arbroath Roll of Honour and Carmyllie church Roll of Honour as Black Watch. Backed up by CWGC and SNWM.

Alexander Kydd is incorrectly listed as serving in the Black Watch, he was in the Royal Scots Fusiliers (mentioned on Carmyllie RoH, Arbroath RoH, CWGC & SNWM)

Also on the transcribed list of names above Crighton is incorrectly listed as Crichton.

3478 Hugh Robertson 5th Btn B.W. did not serve in the New Zealand Army. Although he had emigrated to New Zealand he was unable to serve in the N.Z. forces due to blindness in one eye. He returned to Scotland to join the Black Watch.

George Hunter died as a result of the sinking of HMS Hampshire, which Lord Kitchener was aboard, whilst a Warrant Engineer, not a Wireless Operator.

Major John Palgrave Heathcote Ouchterlony, D.S.O., R. E., who was killed on June 8, two days before his thirty-third birthday, was the eldest son of Lieut.Colonel T. H. Ouchterlony, late R.A., and of the late • Mrs. Ouchterlony, of The Gaynd, Arbroath, Forfarshire. He entered' the Army in 1901. During this war he was twice mentioned in despatches, and was awarded the D.S.O. in the last Birthday Honours List. When recently offered a good appointment in Egypt, he refused it, giving as his reason that " his duty lay in France." His Colonel wrote :—" He was one of the finest officers I have ever known." Major Ouchterlony married, in 1908, the only daughter of the late Mr. W. H. Spackman, barrister-at-law, of Christchurch, New Zealand, who, with a daughter, survives him. A Requiem Mass was said at the Oratory on Tuesday.

Also named on the St. Thomas RC Church memorial in Arbroath.
