PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 20.10.1920

ERROL
DEDICATION OF WAR MEMORIAL

An impressive service was conducted in the Parish Church last Sunday forenoon, when a large and chaste memorial tablet, with the names of over 50 officers, N.C.O.'s, and men of the village and parish who fell in the Great War of 1914-18, was unveiled and dedicated. The service was a joint one with the members of the U.F. Church, and a large and representative gathering from both churches assembled to do homage to the memory of the fallen.
The service was conducted by the Rev. J.A. McLymont D.D. V.D., C.B.E., while the memorial was unveiled by Sir William Robertson, Lord Lieutenant of Fife. The Rev. MacLaren also took part, and Mr A.M. Small presided at the organ. The music was appropriate to the occasion, the lament "The Flowers o' the Forest" played on the organ being particularly impressive. The "Last Post" was sounded by Cpl. Kelly, Black Watch, from Perth Barracks.
In the evening a joint service was conducted in the U.F. Church, the preacher being the Rev. J.A. McLymont.

Apologies but once again, for myself at any rate, the photography proved a bit of a challenge for a variety of reasons.

Hopefully they do some justice to fine memorials.

I think that most of us here have had problems taking photographs of metallic memorials and stained glass windows. Shocked
However, you seem to have had more bad luck than most with memorials that only list names. It must be a nightmare researching the men commemorated on them.

Yes it certainly proves more of a challenge when they are recorded so simply. Its even more satisfying when they are 'identified' though.
Really down to sifting through the local papers.
For Errol , using the CWGC, SDGW and 'The Golden Book' for Perth & Perthshire I've got 44 of the 51 confirmed and about 4 others who only have a couple of options. David Smith could prove more problematic however Confused .

Serjeant Andrew Rennie of the R.F.A. is also listed on the Arbroath, Arbroath old Kirk, and Perth Post Office memorials.

Name: RENNIE
Initials: A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Serjeant
Regiment/Service: Royal Field Artillery
Unit Text: 45th Bde.
Age: 30
Date of Death: 23/07/1917
Service No: 36777
Additional information: Son of Andrew and Catherine Rennie, of Arbroath; husband of Catherine McTavish Stirling (formerly Rennie), of Station House, Auchteralder, Perth shire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Sp. Mem. B. 4.
Cemetery: RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND

According to the Arbroath RoH Andrew Rennie was born at Carmyllie, raised in Arbroath before joining the Army in 1905 and serving in Ireland for 3 years before moving to live in Errol and being a postman in Inchture.

Andrew Rennie married Catherine Henderson in 1910. It's unclear where the "McTavish Stirling" names come from. I imagine Auchteralder is Auchterarder?

Derek.
