Located in the Angus Council Access office on Montrose High Street, inside the former town council house.

Not stricly a memorial but worth posting I think.

It reads:

For Freedom

War Savings Campaign 1944
Presented By The War Office
In Recognition Of
Successful Achievement In
Salute The Soldier Week

Delboy

If you consider a war memorial as a commemoration war service then I think this counts as a war memorial.

That is a cracking piece of sculpture for a week's work!

What material is it do you know? There is nothing to say this is for Montrose so I wonder if these were given to other towns too?

That's made my day seeing this.

Cheers

Salute the Soldier Week was an event held across the country in 1944 to raise funds for the army. It was orgainised in a similar way to the Wings for Victory Week the previous year, with each county set a target for the amount of money they should try to raise. Plaques were awarded by the War Office where these targets were successfully reached.

This must have been the County of Angus plaque. I wonder if we can find out if what other Scottish County was awarded one. It must have been in the papers.

East Renfrewshire Council has one too. It was awarded to First District Renfrewshire

There's one, which was awarded to Hamilton, currently on display in the Low Parks Museum in Hamilton.
