I can see no mention of this elsewhere and my post was prompted by a letter in today's Herald.

"Public Presentation for Proposed Houses and a New Memorial

Four Acres Charitable Trust is holding a public presentation in Cottier's Restaurant on 9th June 2008 at 7.30 in order to consult with the local community about proposals to complete a terrace on Highburgh Road begun by architect Peter McGregor Chalmers in 1898 but never completed and related proposals to build a war memorial on the corner of Highburgh Road and Hyndland Road.

Details are contained in a planning report that seeks to address the planning, conservation area and listed building issues raised by the development proposals. It takes account of advice provided by PAN 81 Community Engagement."

More at the website http://www.thecottier.com/news.html?c=viewItem&id=31 including a lengthy pdf.

Herald letter

"As a west end resident, I am appalled by the decision Cottier's has taken to build houses on land that was dedicated to the men of Dowanhill Church who perished in the 1914-18 war. This ground was gifted by members of the church for this reason. I find it hard to believe that the Church of Scotland would agree to the erection of houses on dedicated land."

Thanks for the information. Looking at the proposals I think it looks like a good design. The Victory park will go but it looks like it was negelected anyway and in it's place will be a rather magnificent memorial which has had a lot of thought put into it. It will certainly last a lot longer than a lot of the recently erected concrete and stainless steel memorials.

We'll hopefully be able to follow the progress of this memorial.

Regards

Adam
