Caithness

My records are all by old counties. The info is yours to compare with what is already recorded, tho I see that Adam has been up that way. However, I think a few of mine are not listed on the main list.

Visited in 1983/44. No photos or names, only recorded the numbers.

There are 10 parishes on my old 1” OS maps.

Thurso: WM in town centre, no exact count, approx 120 WW1 and 40 WW2. UKNI ref 5947, has a count of 112 + 36.

Olrig WM is in the village of Castltown, 48 + 9 on my record.

Dunnet WM is in the cemetery just outside the village, 31 names from WW1, none from WW2. UKNI ref is 5945 and has a count of 31 + 8.

Canisbay WM is on a minor rd, shown on OS map at grid ref 342 717.

Reay WM is in the village on the main rd. 37 + 8 my count. LG records 3 names. UKNI ref 5955, counts 31 + 9.

Halkirk WM I didn’t find but LG lists 20 names. UKNI ref is 5946 and has account of 63 + 19.

Bower parish has 2 WMs, one at the cross rds grid ref 229 607. I have no details for this. LG has a list of 42 names. UKNI ref is 5958 and counts 42 + 8.
The other is at Lyth Cross Rds which commemorates the men of the Barrock Estate and has 19 + 4 names. UKNI refs are 5938 and 5940 but must be the same WM though there are 2 different figures: 19 + 0 for 5938 and 20 + 4 for 5940. LG counts 19 WW1 only. These may also be on the main WM.

Watten WM is on the main rd A882 and I counted 34 + 9. LG says it is at the parish ch and lists 31 names. UKNI ref is 5935 and counts 34 +9.

Wick has at least 5 WMs. The big one is in the town centre just southside of the river bridge. I estimated 250 names. UKNI ref 5937, has 390 + 59.

2nd one is at Keiss, north of the town on the A9, shown on OS map at 348 614. I counted 34 + 9, LG has 35 names. UKNI ref 5934, 37 + 6.

3rd is on the A9 nr airport, grid ref 360 519, for the men of Ackergill and Hemprigg estates. I have no count, but LG has 19 names. UKNI ref 5957, also counts 19 WW1 only.

4th is at Staxigoe, for Papigo, Staxigo and Noss district. My count is 16 + 2, LG has 11 names. UKNI ref 5953, 11 WW1, 2 WW2.

5th commemorates the Thrumster est, on A9 sth of town, I and LG have no details.

Latheron has 5 WMs:

1) at Clyth, grid ref 298 378 on the A9 a couple of miles north of Lybster. UKNI ref is 5936, counts 16 + 6 for Mid Clyth, East Clyth, Ulbster and Newlands.

2) is at Lybster village, on the A9. I have no count. Neither does LG or UKNI, tho it has a ref, 5949 with little detail. Grid ref 160 520.

3) is for Latheron, Latheronwheal and Forse and is on the A9 at Latheron. My count 32 + 9, LG has 29 names. UKNI ref 5951, counts 29 + 11

4) is at Dunbeath in the village on the old A9. I have 27 + 10, LG has 30 names. UKNI ref 5944, counts 39 + 10.

5) is for Berriedale and Braemore and is on the old A9 in Berriedale village. My count is 19 + 5, no entry on LG or UKNI.

That's all.

John

Thanks again for your detailed lists. I have edited your post to add links to the memorials already photographed and included on the forum.

I'd visted the ones in Latheron last year and Ian A visited a few in the North-East corner of Caithness on his way to Orkney this year.

A you can see we need a few from the West and North of the County to complete al the civic memorials in Caithness.

Regards

Adam
