UKNIWM Ref: 44379

This is one of six church memorials now to be found in Castle Douglas Parish Church at OS Map Ref: NX 765 622. There does not seem to be a corresponding WW2 memorial. UKNIWM states that St Georges church is now a supermarket.

CPL JAMES BAIRD 1/15TH LONDON REGT
James Baird – age 23 – Lance Sergeant (6534 & 533298) 1/15th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (Princes of Wales' Own Civil Service Rifles)
James served his apprenticeship in the Bank of Scotland in Castle Douglas and he was working in the Kelso branch when he enlisted.
Born 1894 at Castle Douglas in Kelton parish. Son of James and Isabella (Brydson) Baird of Glenrigg Place, Castle Douglas.
Killed in Action on 6 April 1918 and buried in Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial and on the Bank of Scotland Memorial in Edinburgh.

PTE DAVID CROSBIE 17TH HLI
David Crosbie – age 38 - Private (42018) 17th Battalion (3rd Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
David was a stone mason when he enlisted as Private (5778) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in November 1916. He was transferred to the HLI in France in January 1917 and served in the Lewis Gun Section.
Born 1879 at Islen, Buchan in Kelton Parish. Son of Martha Crosbie, latterly an Hotel Keeper of Queen Street, Castle Douglas. Husband of Jane McGregor (Wilson) Crosbie of 19 Newmarket Street, Castle Douglas who he married in 1910 at Castle Douglas in Kelton Parish.
Missing in Action on 2 December 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial and on the Roll of Honour in the Carpet Bowling Club.
On 2 December the 17th HLI unsuccessfully attacked German positions at Passchendaele Ridge. The Battalion's casualties were 48 killed, 135 wounded and 13 missing.

PTE SAM McGILL 6TH KOSB
Samuel McGill – age 22 – Private (20709) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Samuel was an engine driver when he enlisted in July 1915. He joined his battalion in France in October and was evacuated to hospital in Bedford with frost-bite in April 1916. Samuel was badly wounded in August and later died of his wounds in the 2nd Canadian General Hospital in Le Treport
Born 1893 at Palnackie, Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Annie (Robinson) McGill of 34 Carlingwark Street, Castle Douglas and of Palnackie, Buittle, Dalbeattie.
Died of Wounds on 13 September 1916 and buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.
Also named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial and on the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School memorial.

1ST AIR MECH ROBERT McLEOD RAF
Robert McLeod – age 22 – Air Mechanic 1st Class (403509) “X” Aircraft Park, Royal Air Force.
Robert enlisted as Gunner (4214) in the Kirkcudbrightshire Battery of the 2nd Lowland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery and landed with his battery in Egypt in June 1915. Later he transferred to RAF. Robert died of pneumonia in the 21st General Hospital in Alexandria while enroute home.
Born 1895 at Carlingwark Hill, Castle Douglas in Kelton Parish. Son of David and Elizabeth (Stewart) McLeod of Queen Street, Castle Douglas.
Died on Service on 19 December 1918 and buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial and on the Roll of Honour in the Carpet Bowling Club.


DRIVER JAMES McNAUGHT RFA
James McNaught – age 32 – Driver (4318) 2nd Lowland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
James had served with the Galloway Rifles Volunteers from 1902 to 1908. A keen sportsman, he was a joiner and builder and worked with his father before he enlisted in the Kirkcudbrightshire Battery of the 2nd Lowland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery in September 1914. He contracted scarlet fever while in training and died in Camelon Hospital in Falkirk.
Born 1883 at Castle Douglas in Kelton Parish. Son of John and Agnes (Maxwell) McNaught of Church Street, Castle Douglas.
Died on Service on 23 March 1915 and buried in Kelton Old Churchyard. (CWG)

SERGT JAMES STEWART 6TH KOSB

James Stewart – age 38 – Sergeant (12383) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a baker when he enlisted as Private (5469) in the KOSB in October 1895 when he was 18 years old. After 12 years service, 5 of those in India, Burma and Aden, James was transferred to the Army Reserve in 1907 and became a Postman in Castle Douglas and Auchencairn. He enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915. James was fatally wounded at Loos.
Born 1877 at Academy Street, Castle Douglas in Kelton Parish as William James Carruthers Stewart. Son of Adam and Margaret (Carruthers) Stewart of Academy Street, Castle Douglas.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial and on the Rolls of Honour in Castle Douglas Post Office and in the Carpet Bowling Club.
