Christ Church, Dalbeattie has always been known locally as the "English" church and I've always assumed that it was because it is Episcopalian.
However recently I've noticed that on census records for Dalbeattie a place of birth which appears regularly is Leicestershire and it is always associated with granite workers.
It turns out that when the granite industry in Dalbeattie ("The Granite Town") first took-off there was a shortage of skilled workers and men were encouraged to come to the area from other granite producing parts of the country. Eventually they built their own church in the area of the High St. where they lived.
The full story is at http://freespace.virgin.net/richard.wordsmith/cchist.htm
One of the parishioners was:
George William Harriman – age 41 - Private (25603) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1875 at Mountsorrell, Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire.
Brought up and educated in Dalbeattie, he was a Sett Maker as was his father and uncle. He was the son of Reuben (born Leicester) and Sarah (Knight) Harriman (born Nottingham) of High St. Dalbeattie.
He married Edith Agnes (Heatherington) Harriman in 1900 at Middleton in Teesdale, Co. Durham.
Missing in Action - 23 April 1917.
Commonwealth War Grave – Arras Memorial, France. _________________ Ken |

At an "open day" at Christ Church yesterday I had the good luck to meet a brother of Flt. Sgt. Gordon McFadyean.
Gordon had been through flight training at Pensacola, Florida, and flight navigation training at Prince Edward Island, before being posted to 48 Squadron RAF based at Gibralter.
He was on a test flight of a Lockheed Hudson of Coastal Command, converted to fire wing-mounted anti ship/submarine rockets when the aircraft failed to pull out of a shallow dive and plunged into the sea. _________________ Ken |
