Bombardier

I don't know if you know Gorebridge but it's not one of Midlothian's beauty spots. It does look after its memorials though. Midlothian council is pretty good at looking after its memorials, any time I've been to one it's been well maintained.

Cheers

Does this memorial include the Middleton/North Middleton areas as well? Or is that Borthwick?

Is there a photo of the first panel missing?

According to the description of the Stobhill enumeration district in the 1901 census, it was made up of a portion of each of the civil parishes of Cockpen, Newbattle, Borthwick and Temple. The portion of Borthick civil parish extends as far as Harvieston Gate (presumably in modern terms, by the crossroads on the A7 at the south end of Gorebridge). If the War Memorial covered the same area as the Quoad Sacra parish, which the enumeration district seems to be the same as, then Middleton and North Middleton are both south of there, and hence should be covered by the Borthwick Civil Parish memorial.

Yes, the panel headed by the two female names is missing.

I'll have to check if I've got it on photobucket

WW1
William Mitchell, Pte. C. Hghrs.

(Glasgow Herald 24th November 1914)
"Private William Mitchell, the Cameron Highlanders, who was killed in a cave accident which overtook an ambulance party of his regiment at the battle of the Aisne, was the son of Mr George Knowles Mitchell, for some years a coal merchant in the south side of Edinburgh.
He served for seven years in the colours, returning to civilian life at the age of 22 in 1911. On the outbreak of war he was called up with the reservists, and became an R.A.M.C. orderly at the front. It was while acting in this capacity he was killed by the collapsing of a cave which the Camerons were using as a collecting base for wounded.
Private Mitchell was married about a year ago. Before being called up in August he was employed with Mr Grosset, grocer, Gorebridge.

The memorial is at present completely surrounded by builders guarding while they construct the local HUB, so I will replace these when all of that has been removed.
