East Wemyss - Kirkcaldy District
UKNIWM Ref No. 5718
The East Wemyss war memorial is in the form of a shrine constructed of sandstone and recessed into the wall in front of St. Mary's Church. The central pedestal is flanked by a wall with stone ballustrade on both sides, terminating in pillars, and is surmounted by a half scale bronze statuette of an infantryman which is signed 'Tweed 1921'. The names of the WWI dead are in lead lettering on granite panels on the face and either side of the pedestal.

The first man named on this memorial, James S. Agnew was a clergyman at East Wemyss when he enlisted.
My notes from the Penninghame Parish War Memorial in Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire.

John Simpson Agnew, Lieutenant: 2nd Bn. attached to the 1/5th Bn. Highland Light Infantry. Formerly Private (12191) Scots Guards. Age 32.
Born 1888 in Penninghame. Son of John Simpson Agnew and of Agnes (Stewart) Agnew. Husband of Elizabeth Jane (Campbell) Agnew who he married in 1910 in Glasgow. John was educated at the Ewart High School in Newton Stewart and at Glasgow University where he was awarded an M.A. in 1909. He was a clergyman when he enlisted in November 1914 and was wounded at Festubert. In October 1915 he was commissioned and joined the 1/5th HLI in Egypt but was badly wounded in Palestine and invalided home. After he was discharged he was involved in welfare work in Paisley and had just been accepted as the Minister of Yoker Parish Church when he was admitted to Paisley Infirmary where on 28 December 1920 he died from illness related to his wounds.

And yes, that is one of the photographs on here that has been used. I was contacted by a reporter from the Central Scotland News Agency asking if he could use our photographs. I agreed as long as we were credited as the source. Clearly that hasn't happened when the details were given to the BBC - but at least it lets people know what the statue looks like.
It was stolen before and recovered. I hope that the same will happen again. |

| The Courier is reporting that the statue was found at the entrance to Hayfield Cemetery in Kirkcaldy at around 8am this morning. |
