The Fairlie war memorial is sandstone celtic cross with whee-head and bosses which stands on a grey granite tepering pedestal. The monument stands on a junction on the main road.

Lady Grizel Mary Boyle was born on 28 April 1913.1 She was the daughter of Captain Patrick James Boyle, 8th Earl of Glasgow and Hyacyinthe Mary Bell.1 She married Major Malcolm Victor Alexander Wolfe Murray, son of Brig.-Gen. Arthur Alexander Wolfe Murray and Evelyn Mary Hay Mackenzie, on 23 April 1935.1 She died on 26 September 1942 at age 29, lost at sea through enemy action.1
Her married name became Murray.

There is a memorial plaque to her and 5 others along with a bursary at Westonbirt School.

Does anyone have any information on Captain Alex McCallum, Ive been scouring ancestry, Archives, CWGC.....maybe its me, but I cant find anything on Alex McCallum.

I came across an Alexander Miekle McCallum, Highland Light Infantry, DOW 3/4/1917, remarkably on his MIC it states he went from Private to Temp/Captain?

1891 census Ayrs., Largs, Whin Cottage. Family of six all born Fairlie. Daniel McCallum (39), Master Joiner, and his wife Janet (33). Daniel aged 1 is the youngest.

M'CALLUM.- Died of wounds on 3rd April, Alexander Meikle M'Callum, Capt., H.L.I., third son of Mr and Mrs John M'Callum, 73 Kenmure Street, Pollokshields and Fairlie."

Same publication, Saturday, 7th. April, 1917, page 7:- "CASUALTIES Note on Officers CAPT. A. M. M'CALLUM
Mr and Mrs M'Callum, 73 Kenmure Street, Pollokshields and Fairlie, have received intimation that their son, Captain Alexander M. M'Callum, died of wounds on the 3rd Inst. Captain M'Callum was a solicitor with the firm of Messrs. J.M. and J.H. Robertson, 120 Bath Street, Glasgow. He was well known in athletic circles being a member of the Cartha (or something quite like it) Athletic Club. Perhaps he was best known as an international hockey player."
