Not listed on UKNIWM

Location OS Map Ref: NX 969 760

This memorial is a roll of honour for J Maxwell and Son, Printers and Publishers of Dumfries. It is rather smaller than you might expect, I didn't think to measure it, but it must be little more than A5 in size and does not note those who died. The memorial is now in Dumfries Museum (not on display).

This memorial has only come to light thanks to the kind efforts of Joanne Turner at Dumfries Museum. She also kindly provided the following notes.

"DUMFM:2000.18

J Maxwell and Son, Dumfries Roll of Honour.
James Maxwell and Sons, Printers, Lithographers and Bookbinders, High Street, Dumfries

Names on the Roll of Honour comprise the firm’s employees who fought in the First World War.

Lists the names of 22 men and their regiments.

NOTES (from donor):

The Roll of Honour - 1914-18 War was of employees of James Maxwell who served in the Great War. It is believed most of those named survived the war.

Lt William Dinwiddie was a member of the family of Robert Dinwiddie who took over the business of J Maxwell c 1930.

Private William Stitt was a native of Sanquhar. Married Elizabeth Boyd prior
to 1914-18 war. After the war he became manager of "Popes" Pen Corner in
Birmingham. He died there. He was a member of the RAMC as a stretcher bearer during WWI.

Private Robert Niven was a printing machine operator with J Maxwell and
returned to his employ after WWI and later worked for Dinwiddie. He died c1941. He was a trombone player in the Dumfries Town band.

Thank you very much for the info on Murdo Stewart, I did not know that he died in 1918. As stated on the headstone, he was wounded during the charge of 12th July 1915 at Gallipoli - he was discharged due to his wounds on 8th Jan 1916. Although the report of his wounding indicated that he could no longer be a frontline soldier, the wounds didn't seem to be life threatening. I will have to get his death certificate to see what is stated as cause of death.

Cheers,

Stuart
