The Scotsman, 19th October 1920
SWINTON - The Earl of Home unveiled a war memorial at Swinton to the memory of the twenty-four men from the parish who fell in the war. The memorial takes the form of a cairn of local freestone, 18 feet high, bearing a granite slab with the names of the fallen; above which is an incised cross of early Saxon type, with symbolic thistle and St Andrew's cross, and the word "Remember". The monument was designed by Mr RT Rose Oliver, Tweedsmuir. The parish, out of a population of about 650 [660?], contributed 123 men to the services during the war [128?].
The Buildings of Scotland - Borders, p714
War Memorial, at the corner of Coldstream and Main streets, c1920. In the form of a Border cairn, with a granite panel containing the names of the fallen. |

Pte. JOHN BOOKLESS, 9th SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Named on the Galashiels War Memorial as:
PTE. JOHN BOOKLESS. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Bookless – age 24 – Private (315609) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John enlisted as Private (4427) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but he was posted to the 9th Scottish Rifles in France, He died in the 53rd General Hospital in Boulogne.
Born 1894 in Swinton, Berwickshire. Son of John and Mary (Shiels) Bookless of Swinton, Berwickshire. Husband of Margaret (Storie) Bookless of 2 Hill Street, Galashiels who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 1 November 1918 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.
I suspect that the WILLIAM BOOKLESS, 4th KOSB on the memorial was his brother.
CWGC has Private (7553) 1/4th KOSB Died 12 July 1915 - but no family detail.
Southern Reporter of 26/8/1915 has:
William Bookless. 4th K.O.S.B.. Auchencrow, lias been killed at the Dardanelles. Before enlisting last December he was a mole trapper in the district. He leaves a widow and two children. His father and mother live in Swinton, of which town he was native. His onlv brother is in the 2/4 th K.O.S.B. _________________ Ken |

There is a William and John Bookless listed in the 1910 Scottish Census as sons of John and Mary.
An unusual surname. _________________
