In regard to "Swinton, George, Piper, KOSB" -

Was it normal to list someone with an honoury rank rather than their official rank. George Swinton is listed as a Private on his MIC and War Medal.

Thanks.

In my experience it is not normal for the honoury rank to be listed. However, I'm sure that there is another Borders' memorial listed here which features 4 or 5 "pipers".

In reference to the St.Boswell's memorial, the name panels have been moved from the side facing the road are are now on the safer inside, infact on the face that is sown on the first photograph above. I have no idea when this took place.

I'm sure someone will put me right but I think it's because Piper was an appointment not a rank. He would be known as Piper within the battalion and to his friends and family but in all official records he would be listed as Private.

This memorial is the one that I've seen the most change in.

In the last 4 years(?) the naming plaques have both been removed from the surface facing the A68 and are now on the opposite side, away from the traffic. Railings have also been added and a false Cross plate added to the front where the original name plaques were inserted.

One of the biggest improvements here is when the annual Armistice Service is being held - away from traffic.
