Adam I thought I might add another picture of the WWI panel, the letters don't seem to have been so weathered when I took it in the mid 90's.

The Scotsman, 28th August 1923

COLDINGHAM - Major Waring, MP for East Lothian and Berwickshire, who was accompanied by the Dowager-Marchioness of Tweeddale, unveiled a war memorial at Coldingham on Sunday afternoon. There was a united open-air service, in which the ministers of Coldingham and St Abbs took part. Mr RB Bell, chairman of the Parish Council, accepted on behalf of that body the custody of the memorial, which bears the names of 39 men of the village and district who fell in the war.

WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILED Coldingham men remembered
On Sunday, the tenth anniversary of the commencement of the Second World War, a memorial plaque, added to the war memorial commemorating the names of those who fell during the First World War, was unveiled at Coldingham.
The plaque bears the names James P. Robertson, Chief Engineer, Merchant Navy; John D. McGuire, L Sgt., Cameron Highlanders; William R. Swan, Rifleman, Cameronians; John Wood, CpL, Seaforth Highlanders.
There was a large number people present at the war memorial when Mr G. Innes Smith, joint convener of the War Memorial Committee invited Col. G M. Miller, M.C., T.D., D.L., Convener of the County of Berwick, to unveil the plaque and accept it on behalf of the East District Council.


Interesting to note that the names ROBERT T. WILSON, MERCHANT NAVY. and ALEXANDER GIBSON, CAPTAIN, MERCHANT NAVY. were added at a later date.

AITKMAN, ALEXANDER. 4th K.O.S.B.
Note: All records show the family name as AIKMAN.
Alexander Aikman – age 20 – Private (7310) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Alexander was living with his grandparents Adam and Mary Aikman, his father Robert and his brother Adam in Coldingham. He was employed at Whitecross Farm, Coldingham when he enlisted and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 at Pease Lye, Cockburnspath, Berwickshire. Son of the late Catherine (Walker) Aikman (died 1895) and of Robert Aikman of Coldingham Law.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial.


BUGLASS, JAMES. 4th K.O.S.B.
James Buglass – age 23 – Private (22679) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James and his family had moved from Coldingham to Dunbar, East Lothian before the war and he enlisted there. He was wounded on the Somme on 3 July 1916 and after treatment in hospital at Abbeville he was evacuated to the Military Hospital in Stockport where he died.
Born 1893 in Coldingham. Son of the late James Buglass (died 1906) and Helen (Edie) Buglass of Coldingham and of Westbarn, Dunbar.
Died of Wounds on 28 July 1916 and buried in Coldingham Priory Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial and on the Burgh & Parish of Dunbar War Memorial.


CRAIG, THOMAS D. H.M.S. HALCYON.
Thomas Dougal Craig – age 33 – Deck Hand (2968/SD) H.M.S. Halcyon, Royal Naval Reserve.
Thomas enlisted in October 1915 and served on various minesweepers throughout the war. He died of influenza and pneumonia in Gunton Hospital, Lowestoft, Suffolk.
Born 1886 in St. Abbs, Coldingham. Son of the late Isabella (Jones) Craig (died 1911) and of John Craig of 9 Harbour Terrace, St. Abbs.
Died on Service on 15 February 1919 and buried in Coldingham Priory Churchyard. (CWG)

CROW, ROBERT. 4th K.O.S.B.
Robert Crow – age 24 – Private (4408) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a dairyman in Coldingham and, as a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB, he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he contracted dysentery and was evacuated to hospital in Alexandria, Egypt where he died.
Born 1890 in Stitchel, Roxburghshire. Son of Jane Crow of Bogan, Coldingham.
Died on Active Service on 17 October 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military And War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.


CROW, WILLIAM T. 255th M.G.C.
William Thorburn Crow – age 19 – Private (62846) 225th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
William enlisted as Private (25424) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but he was selected for and posted to the MGC.
Born 1898 in Coldingham. Son of James and Janet (Cockburn) Crow of Northfield, St. Abbs and of Burnside, Coldingham.
Killed in Action on 26 July 1917 and buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial.


DENHOLM, ROBERT. 2nd K.O.S.B.
Thought to be:
Robert Denholm – age 31 – Private (18659) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Robert was a miller with his father at East Reston Mills, Coldingham when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916 but he was killed six months later on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
Born 1885 in Coldingham. Son of the late Dorothy (Cleghorn) Denholm (died 1896) and of Robert Denholm of East Reston Mills and of Cairncross Farm, Ayton, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Houndwood War Memorial as R. Denholm, Royal Scots.

DICKSON, WILLIAM. 3rd R.S.
William Dickson – age 19 – Private (41298) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a farm servant at Northfield, St Abbs when he enlisted as Private (25346) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in July 1916, He served on “Home” duties until he was posted to France in March 1917. He was transferred to the 12th RS in April but he was killed a month later.
Born 1896 in St. Abbs, Coldingham. Son of William and Helen Dickson of 3 Harbour Terrace, St. Abbs.
Killed in Action on 10 May 1917 and buried in Faubourg D'amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.


EDINGTON, PETER. 5th R.S.
Peter Edington – age 27 – Lance Corporal (949) 1/5th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Peter was educated at Berwickshire High School in Duns and was working as an engineer in Edinburgh when as a member of the Territorials he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in April 1915 but was wounded twice. After the second wounding he was being evacuated on the Troopship “Tunisian” when he died and he was buried at sea.
Born 1888 in Coldingham. Son of Thomas and Janet Fortune (Hardie) Edington of the Bow, Coldingham.
Died of Wounds on 9 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial and on the Berwickshire High School memorial.


GIBSON, JOHN. 8th CANADIANS
John Gibson – age 21 – Private (2378762) 8th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John was employed as a conductor and was living with his brother Thomas at Salter Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba when he was drafted in January 1918. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in February and joined his battalion in France in May. He was fatally wounded in August and died three days later in the 32nd Stationary Hospital in Wimereux.
Born 1897 in Swinton, Berwickshire. Son of the late Thomas Gibson of Chirnside, Berwickshire (died 1905) and of Mathieson Cairns (Nelson) Gibson of Bee Edge, Coldingham and of Atlantic Avenue, Winnipeg.
Died of Wounds on 18 August 1918 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial as John Nelson Gibson.

GILCHRIST, WILLIAM. 1st SCOTS Gds.
William Gilchrist – age 24 – Private (11990) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
William enlisted in October 1914 and he joined his battalion in France in April 1915.
Born 1891 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Son of the late Jessie Lyon (Dunlop) Gilchrist (died 1912) and of George Alston Gilchrist of Bogangreen, Coldingham.
Missing in Action on 27 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial.


IRVINE, WILLIAM. 10th A. & S. Hgrs.
The connection to Coldingham is not know but he is thought to be:
William Irvine – age 27 – Private (S/17700) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Born 1889 in Renfrew. Son of the late Hugh Irvine (died 1893) and of Jane (Blair) Campbell (formerly Irvine) of 27 Hairst Street, Renfrew.
Jane married William Campbell in 1897 in Renfrew.
Killed in Action on 16 April 1917 and buried in Point-du-Jour Military Cemetery, Athies, France.
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial and on the Renfrew Burgh War Memorial.


JENKINS, ANDREW. R.N.R.
Not listed by CWGC.
Andrew Hunter Jenkins – age 45 – Captain, S.S. Eastern Prince, Merchant Marine.
Andrew had come to Coldingham in about 1885 and had first gone to sea, aged 15, in January 1886. He obtained his Masters certificate when aged just 21 and he joined the Prince Line of Newcastle in 1899, becoming a Captain of their ships in 1906. He was awarded a commission as a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve in December 1916 in recognition of his actions during a surface attack on the “Japanese Prince” by a German submarine in the Mediterranean. The “Japanese Prince” was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC-47 in February 1917 but the crew were rescued. Andrew was given command of the “Eastern Prince” but after arriving at Greenwich Pier in Philadelphia, USA he became ill and died of apoplexy. His body was returned to his family in Coldingham and buried in late June 1917.
Born 1872 in Glasgow as Andrew Hunter Jenkins. Son of the late Margaret (Hunter) Jenkins (died 1877) and of the late Joseph Jenkins (died 1885 in Coldingham) former Chief Constable of Dunbartonshire. Husband of Herriott (Buglass) Jenkins of Burnlea, Coldingham who he married in 1898 in Coldingham.
Died on 29 May 1917 and buried in Coldingham Priory Churchyard.
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial.

LAING, GEORGE. 79th CANADIANS
George Laing – age 25 – Private (859343) 179th Battalion (Cameron Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Infantry.
The Laing family emigrated to Manitoba in Canada in March 1909. George was a railroad car repairer when he enlisted as Private (73474) at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in October 1914 but he was discharged as medically unfit at Winnipeg, Manitoba in September 1915. He was living at Smith Street, Winnipeg when he re-enlisted in November 1915 but he became ill again and he died in Winnipeg General Hospital.
Born 1882 in Coldingham. Son of the late James Laing of Coldingham (died 1902) and of Jane Hay (White) Laing of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
Died on Service on 15 February 1916 and buried in Winnipeg (Brookside) Cemetery, Canada. (CWG)
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial, on the Prince Albert Roll of Honour and on the Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial.


LAING, JOSEPH. 2nd SEAFORTH Hgrs.
Joseph Laing – age 21 – Lance Sergeant (1183) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Joseph was a regular soldier who landed with his battalion at Boulogne on 23 August 1914.
Born 1895 in Coldingham. Son of the late Peter Laing (died 1913) and of Jane (Neale) Laing of 215 Easter Road. Leith, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

and his brother

LAING, PETER. 15th R.S.

Peter Laing – age 28 – Private (19045) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Peter was an engineer, living at 1 Drum Terrace, Leith when he enlisted in November 1914. He was transferred to munitions work in August 1915 before returning to his regiment in January 1916. Peter was posted to the 15th RS in France in May 1916 but he was fatally wounded two months later and died in the 38th Casualty Clearing Station at Heilly.
Born 1888 in Coldingham. Son of the late Peter Laing (died 1913) and of Jane (Neale) Laing of 215 Easter Road. Leith, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 6 July 1916 and buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-l'Abbe, France.

MABON, ALEXANDER. 6th S.R.
Alexander Mabon – age 39 – Private (41659) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1915 Alexander was a farm servant at Ladyrig, Roxburgh. He was wounded on 3 October 1918 and evacuated to the Special Military Surgical Hospital, Northfield, Birmingham where he died four months later.
Born 1879 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of the late Thomas Mabon (died 1892) and of Margaret (Clark) Mabon of Temple Hall, Coldingham.
Died of Wounds on 24 February 1919 and buried in Coldingham Priory Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial, on the Kelso War Memorial and on the memorial in Kelso North Church.


NAIRN, JOHN M. 5th CAMERON Hgrs.
John Murray Nairn – age 32 – Private (S/22374) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was employed on the reconstruction of Lemmington Hall in Alnwick, Northumberlnad when he enlisted March 1916. Initially reported wounded and missing his remains were recovered from the battlefield.
Born 1883 in Coldingham. Son of John Davidson Nairn and of Margaret (Murray) Nairn of Bogan, Coldingham.
Killed in Action on 18 October 1916 and buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, France.

William Murray Nairn – age 22 – Private (7439) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a stone-dyker with his father when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 in Coldingham. Son of John Davidson Nairn and of Margaret (Murray) Nairn of Bogan, Coldingham.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

NEWTON, THOMAS. 4th R.S.
Thomas Newton – age 27 – Private (19324) 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Thomas was a miner at the Hopetoun Colliery in Bathgate, West Lothian when he enlisted in the Royal Scots in December 1914. He landed with the 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) at Le Havre in January 1916 and fought at the Battle of the Somme but in early 1917 he became ill and no longer fit for active service. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1917 and was returned to the Hopetoun Colliery. Thomas was recalled from the Reserves in April 1918 and posted to the 1/4th RS in France in June but he was killed three months later.
Born 1891 in Edinburgh. Son of Robert John and Margaret (Forbes) Newton of 61 Easton Rows, Bathgate. Husband of Agnes (Thorburn) Newton of Christison's Brae, Coldingham and of Cairncross, Reston who he married on 31 December 1917 in Coldingham.
Missing in Action on 21 September 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Coldingham Priory Parish Church memorial and on the Bathgate War Memorial.


NISBET, JOHN. 2nd R.S.
John Nisbet – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was educated at Broughton High School in Edinburgh and was a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University from where he graduated in 1914. He enlisted as a Private in August 1914 and was commissioned in October. John joined his battalion in France in February 1915.
Born 1891 in Reston, Coldingham and also registered in Cockpen, Midlothian where his father was a railway signalman at Lothian Bridge. Son of William and Isabella (Dunn) Nisbet of 6 Royal Park Terrace Edinburgh and of Victoria Road, Eyemouth, Berwickshire. Isabella died on 3 June 1915 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 15 April 1915 and buried in Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Belgium.
