Chirnside was another Berwickshire parish to mount a church plaque after WWII instead of adding names to the memorial outside. It's quite a dullish metal, hopefully the second shot highlights the lettering better.

Thanks for posting this memorial. We've had Chirnside's WW1 memorial for some time so good to now get the WW2 names recorded here.

The Kenneth McKeachie named on this plaque is the son of the Minister who conducted the service unveiling the First World War memorial.

Official information has been received that Captain K . A . A . M'Keachie , son of the Rev . A . M'Keachie and Mrs M'Keachie , Chirnside , Berwickshire , has died of wounds received in action in Burma . Before the war he was in the banking profession , and held-appointments at St Boswells, Dunbar , and Kinghorn .

GEORGE BAINBRIDGE
George Bainbridge – age 30 – Fusilier (3195580) 6th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers
George was employed in the Chirnside Paper Mill when he enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was posted to the “Skins” and served in North Africa, Sicily and in the Italian campaign. George's remains were recovered from the battlefield and re-interred in June 1945.
Born 1914 in Gateshead, County Durham. Son of Benjamin and Isabella (Smith) Bainbridge of 14 Northfield Terrace, Chirnside.
Killed in Action on 15 May 1944 and buried in Cassino War Cemetery, Italy.


DAVID BISSET
David Bisset – age 22 – Sergeant (650022) 50 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
David was educated at the Berwickshire High School in Duns and he was an Air Gunner when his Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Skellingthorpe near Lincoln to bomb an armoured division depot and garrison at Mailly-le-Camp, south of Reims but the aircraft was shot down and crashed at Poivres.
Born 1922 in Dirleton, East Lothian. Son of James Frederick Bisset and Jessie (Renton) Bisset of Wayside, Chirnside. Formerly of Bisset's Hotel, Gullane East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 4 May 1944 and buried in Poivres Churchyard, France.
Also named on the Berwickshire High School memorial.


ROBERT CLARK
Not listed by CWGC – out of time limit.
Robert Clark – age 27 – Staff Quartermaster Sergeant (S/10691139) Royal Army Service Corps.
Robert was a baker in Duns when he enlisted in March 1942. He died of tuberculosis at the Bangour Military Hospital in West Lothian.
Born 1921 in Chirnside. Son of Adam and Rachel (Purves) Clark of 3 Lammerview. Chirnside. Husband of Filomena (Russo) Clark who he married in 1947 while he was serving with the RASC.
Died on 14 October 1948.

THOMAS COLLIN
Thomas Collin – age 21 – Sergeant (1822863) 467 (RAAF) Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Thomas was a tractor driver at Harelaw Farm, Chirnside when he enlisted, initially in the Royal Navy and then with the RAF. He was the flight engineer when his Australian Air Force Lancaster bomber took off from RAF Waddington near Lincoln for a raid on Rennes. On their return the aircraft was diverted to an emergency landing airfield near Bridlington but it struck a tree and crashed near Beverley.
Born 1922 in Stenton, near Dunbar, East Lothian. Son of Thomas Hook Collin and Beatrice (Oliver) Collin of Harelaw, Chirnside.
Died on Active Service on 9 June 1944 and buried in Chirnside Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


W. RAMSAY DEWAR
William Ramsay Dewar – age 23 – Flying Officer (186249) 355 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Ramsay was educated at Berwickshire High School in Duns. He joined the RAF early in the war and as Sergeant /Flight Engineer (1672759) he served in Bomber Command. He was commissioned in October 1944 and joined his squadron in India in March 1945, flying Liberator bombers from RAF Salbani in West Bengal. He was promoted in April 1945 and spent some time as a flying instructor but he became ill and was flown to hospital in Northallerton in Yorkshire where he died.
Born 1923 in Chirnside. Son of Duncan Bell Dewar and Maggie Jane (Alexander) Dewar of Croftfield, Chirnside.
Died on Service on 28 September 1946 and buried in Chirnside Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Berwickshire High School memorial.

JOHN ELLIOT
John Elliot – age 34 – Captain (121440) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh until 1926. He served an apprenticeship at the Chirnside Paper Mill before moving to London. He returned to Chirnside four years later as an assistant manager and he joined the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was a Sergeant when he was mobilised at the outbreak of war and he was commissioned in February 1940. He was promoted to Captain in 1942 and was the battalion Adjutant when he was killed during an attack on the German town of Heinberg.
Born 1910 in Chirnside. Son of William Hope Elliot and of Janet Duncan (Inglis) Elliot of Edingtom Mains, Chirnside and of Ruthven, Coldstream, Berwickshire. Husband of Mairi Ann (Maclaren) Elliot of Chalmers Hospital, Edinburgh who he married in September 1939 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 24 January 1945 and buried in Sittard War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the George Watson's College memorial and Roll of Honour.


GEORGE FAIRLEY
George Fairley – age 21 – Stoker 1st Class (C/KX158389) H.M.S. Redmill, Royal Navy.
George was educated at the Berwickshire High School in Duns before he joined the Co-operative Society in Chirnside and he enlisted from there. The frigate “Redmill” was on patrol off the north-west coast of Ireland when she was hit by two torpedoes from the German submarine U-1105. She was badly damaged but did not sink and was towed to Lisahally, County Londonderry.
Born 1923 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of the late James McLeish Fairley (died 1940) and of the late Davidina Elizabeth (Halliday) Fairley (died 1936) formerly of Young's Buildings, Chimside. Nephew of James and Isabella (Halliday) Johnston of Northfield Terrace, Chirnside.
Killed in Action on 27 April 1945 and buried in Chirnside Parish Churchyard.
Also named on the Berwickshire High School memorial.


EDWARD HALL
Edward Hall – age 32 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1368188) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Eddie was a crewman on one of two Blackburn Botha aircraft of 4 Air Gunnery School at RAF Morpeth in Northumberland which collided and crashed near the airfield. Many of the trainees were from Dutch Naval Forces.
Born 1910 in Chirnside. Son of the late William Hall (died 1933) and of Elizabeth (Leithead) Hall of Chirnside and of Edinburgh. Husband of Jessie Millicent Priestly (Watt) Hall of Barnet, Hertfordshire who he married in 1938 in Leith, Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 29 March 1943 and buried in Edinburgh Eastern Cemetery. (CWG)

IAN HASTIE
John Everest Hastie – age 21 – Ordinary Seaman (D/JX 272241) H.M.S. Prince of Wales, Royal Navy.
Ian was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh until 1936 before he joined the head office of the Caledonian Insurance Company in Edinburgh. He was called up in May 1941 and after initial training he was posted to the battleship “Prince of Wales”. He sailed with her in October bound for Singapore via Freetown, Cape Town, the Maldives and Ceylon. They docked on 2 December, six days before Japanese aircraft raided Singapore. The “Prince of Wales” and the battle-cruiser “Repulse” had sortied to attack troop convoys but they were attacked and sunk by Japanese aircraft off the coast of Malaya.
Born 1920 in Ayton, Berwickshire. Son of Alexander and Jane (Cairns) Hastie of Ravelston, Chirnside.
Missing in Action/ Lost at Sea on 10 December 1941 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the George Watson's College memorial and Roll of Honour.


FRANK HOGG
Frank Hogg – age 35 – Bombardier (4278585) 149 (The Lancashire Yeomanry) Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Frank had served his apprenticeship as a grocer in Chirnside and he was employed by Messrs Stoddart in the High Street in Berwick when he enlisted in 1940. He had been in action from El Alamein in October 1942 to Tripoli and into Tunisia.
Born 1908 in Chirnside as Frank. Son of the late James Hogg and of Alice Renton (Cockburn) Hogg of West End, Chirnside. Husband of Mary (McCrae) Hogg of Broompark Road, Craigneuk, Wishaw who he married in February 1939 in Wishaw, Dalziel, Lanarkshire.
Killed in Action on 6 April 1943 and buried in Sfax War Cemetery, Tunisia.
Also named on the Craigneuk War Memorial.

WILLIAM JOHNSTON
William Johnston – age 37 – Gunner (11412372) Royal Artillery.
William was employed at the Chirnside Paper Mill when he enlisted. He served in an AA Battery and as a despatch rider but he was killed in a road accident in London.
Born 1907 in Chirnside. Son of the late William Johnston (died 1916) and of Ellen Dickson (Wilson) Johnston of Crosshill, Chirnside. Husband of Elizabeth Ann Dunlop (Horsburgh) Johnston of Sisterpath, Duns who he married in 1941 in Fogo, Berwickshire.
Died on Active Service on 6 December 1944 and buried in Chirnside Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


ADAM MABON
Adam Mabon – age 28 – Pilot Officer (176721) 408 (RCAF) Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Adam was commissioned from Flight Sergeant (1010563) in May 1944 and was the flight engineer on this Canadian Air Force Lancaster bomber which had taken off from RAF Linton-on-Ouse in Yorkshire for a raid on the railway facilities at Cambrai to hamper lines of communications leading to the Normandy area. The aircraft was shot down by a night-fighter and crashed at Tilloy-les-Cambrai.
Born c.1916 but I cannot trace. Son of the late William Mabon (died 1933) and of Elizabeth P. (Pollock) Mabon, of Maloch, East End, Chirnside who married in 1913 in Bathgate, West Lothian.
Killed in Action on 13 June 1944 and buried in Canada Cemetery, Tilloy-Lez-Cambrai, France.
Also named on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.

JACK W. MABON

John William Pollock Mabon – age 19 – Sub-Lieutenant (A) H.M.S. Jackdaw, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
Jack was in training at the Royal Naval Air Station at Crail in Fife (know as HMS Jackdaw) when his Fairey Barracuda of 711 Naval Air Squadron was involved in a mid-air collision off the coast at Fife Ness.
Born 1925 in Chirnside. Son of the late William Mabon (died 1933) and of Elizabeth P. (Pollock) Mabon, of Maloch, East End, Chirnside.
Died on Service on 19 October 1944 and buried in Chirnside Parish Churchyard. (CWG)

Both brothers are named on the Berwickshire High School memorial in Duns.

KENNETH A. McKEACHIE
Kenneth Alfred Alexander McKeachie – age 28 – Major (104810) King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 3rd Battalion, Nigeria Regiment, Royal West African Frontier Force.
Kenneth was educated at Berwickshire High School in Duns and served his apprenticeship in the British Linen Bank at St. Boswells in Roxburghshire. Later he worked at Dunbar in East Lothian and at Kinghorn in Fife. He was commissioned on 2 September 1939 and was posted to the 1st KOSB in France in early 1940. He was rescued from Dunkirk in June and later volunteered for service with the Nigeria Regiment in the East Africa and Abyssinia campaigns. He then served with the regiment in Nigeria for two years before they deployed to Burma in December 1944. Kenneth was fatally wounded during the battle at Akyab and was buried there but he was re-interred in June 1952
Born 1916 in Chirnside. Son of the Rev. Alfred McKeachie, minister of Chirnside Church and of Sybella Leonore (Hunter or Sloan) McKeachie. Husband of Joan (Keyes formerly Stevens) McKeachie, B.A. a graduate of Cape Town University and a resident of Durban and of Cambuslang, Lanarkshire.
Joan, the daughter of Mr & Mrs Stevens of Bloemfontein, South Africa, married Robert Turner in 1948 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 11 March 1945 and buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar.
Also named on the Berwickshire High School memorial and on the British Linen Bank memorial in Edinburgh.


JAMES W. TURNER
James William Turner – age 34 – Private (14761110) 2nd Battalion, The Glasgow Highlanders, Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment)
James was employed at the Chrinside Paper Mill when he enlisted in May 1944. He joined his battalion in Holland in December 1944. The battalion and other units of the 12th Scottish Infantry Division had occupied the village of Stadensen in northern Germany on 14 April 1945 but that night they came under a sustained attack by a battle group of Panzer Division Clausewitz. Close contact fighting continued throughout the night before the enemy withdrew. James was buried in Stadensen and was re-interred in Hanover in June 1947.
Born 1909 in Athelstaneford, East Lothian. Son of James and Euphemia (Darge) Turner of Young's Buildings, Chirnside. Husband of Elizabeth (Kelly) Turner of The Bridge, Chirnside who he married in May 1944 in Chirnside.
Died of Wounds on 15 April 1945 and buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.


ROBERT B. WALKER
Robert Buchan Walker – age 29 – Stoker 1st Class (P/KX121962) H.M. Submarine “Untamed”, Royal Navy.
The newly commissioned submarine “Untamed” foundered in the Clyde off the Kintyre peninsula, near Sanda Island, during training with the 84th Escort Group. The entire crew was lost with the ship. She was salvaged, refitted and named “Vitality”, returning to service in July 1944.
Born 1914 at Buchan Cottages, Duns Castle in Duns. Son of Robert and Elizabeth (Miller) Walker of Chirnside who had married in 1905 on Arran.
Died on Service on 30 May 1943 and buried in Dunoon Cemetery, Argyllshire. (CWG)
Also named on the Berwickshire High School memorial.

The Sandbank War Memorial at Hunters Quay is in part dedicated to the crew of Untamed who were buried at Dunoon cemetery.
