I have recently had an email (30 Sept 2013) from Lt Col Roger J Binks, Secretary to the Scottish National War Memorial at the castle in Edinburgh and he informed me that they are preparing a new website which will allow access as before - hopefully in a more simple format

Best wishes

The new site and format is now on-line.
I'm still trying to decide if I like it (or if it's just different - I don't do different)

I notice the search engine is for both wars unlike previously.
It looks a bit more polished, same info and same errors/omissions though.

Not sure if I like the mix of WW1 and WW2 names on the one page. Takes longer to find the person you are searching for on the site.

More 'polished' look gives a better impression to one-off visitors.

Similarly giving dates as "1st August 1945" not "01/08/1945".
(Though it could lead to mistakes for those converting into number form).

But having WWI & WWII in one search is inconvenient.
(Ditto splitting searches with 51+ returns over multiple pages).

Ideally there'd be a "filter" when you put in the search details.

Or you'd be able to click 'Era' and sort the results by conflict.

Edit: Actually - this revamp is proving rather frustrating, in an unexpected way. I'd begun working my way through the Berwickshire memorials, and putting details from the memorials, CWGC, SNWM and Medal Index Cards into a database.

With each man's entry I put the web addresses, for future reference.

e.g. the 3 addresses for 7252 Private Ralph Dodds, Abbey St Bathans:

http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/695264/DODDS,%20RALPH
http://www.snwm.org/cgi-bin/db_w1.pl?function=view&id=67573
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D2646971

Regretably, the SNWM link no longer works. Just takes you to frontpage.

His SNWM entry now has a new address:

http://www.snwm.org/content/roll-search/?id=365258&searchid=a0719937bb11089a77b4bd170efe5ff5&page=1

That is a handy addition. I think that information has always been available on the printed rolls in the shrine so it is good to see it online now.

I've checked my older casualty posts on the forum which have the older SNWM website data format, and there are no cause of death sections.

Derek.

Just been searching for three men named MACK and got over 2000 returns starting with CORMACK!
Is there anyway to limit the search to the name? I tried quotes.

That is frustrating. Something Lt Col Binks should be made aware of I think.

In the mean time a search on Geoff's SNWM will give only the Macks but unfortunately no longer link directly to the entry. It will give you the details of the 47 names which can be used to narrow down the SNWM search.

Search options for surnames have now appeared.

Ran across this (while looking for something else!) in the Aberdeen P&J 18 October 1918.

SCOTTISH NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL
ADVISORY COMMITTEE.
The Secretary for Scotland has appointed the following Committee to consider what steps should be taken towards the utilisation of Edinburgh Castle for the purposes of Scottish National War Memorial:
Brigadier General the Duke of Atholl, K.T.
The Admiral Commanding-in-Chief at Rosyth.
The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief. Scottish Command.
Lord Provost Sir James Taggart.
Lord Provost of Edinburgh.
Lord Provost Glasgow.
Lord Provost of Dundee.
Lord Provost of Perth.
The Right Hon. William Adamson, MP.
Lord Balfour of Burleigh, K.T., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O.
James Brown. Ayr.
Sir John Burnet. RS.A.
Lieut.-Colonel D. W. Cameron of Lochiel C.MG.
Lieut.-General Sir J. Ewart, K.C.B.
Sir John Findlay. K.B.E.
Lord Glenconner.
Sir J. H. A. Macdonald G.C.8., etc.
Sir Herbert Maxwell of Monreith.
Sir Hector Munro of Foulis.
Lord Newlands.
Sir William Robertson, Dunfermline.
The Very Rev. Sir George Adam Smith, D.D.
The Right Hon. Eugene Wason, M.P.
The Very Rev. A. Wallace Williamson, D.D.
Sir George Younger. M.P.
Brigadier-General the Duke Atholl is appointed chairman and Lord Carmichael vice-chairman of the Committee, and Captain George Swinton, 9 Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh, secretary.
In a statement to the House of Commons last January Mr Munro pointed out that after the war Edinburgh Castle would np longer required for the accommodation of any large body of troops. No site could found so appropriate a Scottish National Memorial. He had laid this suggestion before the Cabinet Committee appointed for the consideration the scheme for an Imperial War Museum, and through them before the War Cabinet. The War Cabinet, he said, had indicated their general approval of the proposal. He intended to appoint a committee to consider how the scheme, which would, at the appropriate time, involve an appeal for a national subscription, could best be matured during the war.
