UKNIWM Ref: 53815
Address
In a field east of Laggan
A86
Laggan
HIGHLAND
SCOTLAND
Type: PILLAR/COLUMN
Other Location Details: In a field east of Laggan (1m), off A86, 150m
OS Map Ref: NN 628 942
The memorial is described by UKNIWM as Balgowan - Laggan and recording the names of men from these villages. It is more likely to be those from the Parish of Laggan which includes Balgowan. Maybe a local researcher has access to the local press of the day to confirm this. A translation of the Gaelic " MAR CHUIMNNEACHAN " would also be of interest.
The sculptors of the Laggan memorial were Carden & Co of Aberdeen. _________________ Jim

It means 'As a token of respect or gratitude' or 'As a memorial'.

The Sculptors were Garden & Co of Aberdeen, vice Carden & Co.
Garden's also built the Muncaster Memorial, on the back of the success of the Laggan scheme
The WMR (UKNIWM) entry has now been amended to Laggan & District.
This is demonstrated by a file of papers (reference DPen 349) regarding this memorial at Whitehaven Record Office, Cumbria. They are at Whitehaven because the major landowners of the Ardverikie Estate (the over-riding term for a number of estates they owned in the area, covering 130,000 acres) were the Ramsden family of Muncaster Castle, Ardverikie, Africa and Malaya. |
