Anyone know a quick ("simples") way of confirming the award of the Military Medal?
I have three men on the Tongland Parish Memorial - Samuel Dalziel and two of the McLellan brothers, David and Rowat, who are listed as M.M. but I cannot seem to confirm any of them.

Is there an easy way to use the London Gazette search function?
Any other ideas - please?

Ken

Rowat McLellan's medal card has MM on it, but odly it is struck through. SNWM lists an award to him of the MM, the only one of the three.
Nothing on Dalziel's card, nor David McLellan.
David McLellans service file shows him awarded the 14-15 Star, War and Victory only.

Ken,

In a word: NO!

It is the most useless piece of software ever - even surpassing Itunes for incompetence.

Do you have any further details on your boys? Regiment, date of death etc?

I've searched the London Gazette and had no luck with any of them.

Ken,

My files indicate that only Rowat was awarded the MM - London Gazette - n.b. 'S/' prefix since he was a war time enlistment.

A quicker, and usually reliable, way of checking is to use surname and number only on the NA MIC search (first names are usually initials only). Returns under WO 372/23 are MM and DCM awards. Likewise, WO 372/24 are usually MiD and TFEM.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Stuart do you know if the Samuel Dalziel is the same man who is listed on the Balmaclellan WM?
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=528

He is shown as a Sgt. KOSB with M.M. and SNWM has him as born in Parton.

Yes, the same man, I'm sure. His father was noted in the local paper as 'the late Mr Samuel Dalziel, roadman, Ewanstone, Balmaclellan'.

I don't know how the belief arose that Samuel had been awarded the MM. In David McLellan's case, I think there may have been some confusion as to which brothers the MM was awarded. In addition to Rowat, another brother, Gilbert, was also a MM recipient.

I have a similar query.

On North Berwick there is listed W.K. Redpath, Sgt. M.M. Bar but my attempt to use the London Gazette has come up with nothing. I think this is his CWGC entry and it makes no mention of it, but the same man on SNWM does?

Can anyone help clear this up?

Hi Derek,

Here is the link to his MM award in the London Gazette. I can't find any mention of a second award. The CWGC should update his entry if you supply the LG page/reference.

Cheers,

Stuart

Good work Stuart,

I had the feeling it was on the memorial in error, like some on the forum have found to be previously, glad it isn't though!

Cheers,
Derek.

14133 Lance Corporal Harry Mansfield Lowe. M.M.?

Again I've a man who is mentioned in certain sources as having the M.M. but it's not on his CWGC listing, nor his Headstone.
It is on his SNWM entry, Rothesay war memorial and mentioned in his newspaper obituary (below).

If anyone can find a mention in the London Gazette or see it on his M.I.C. or military records that'd be helpful.

Cheers,
Derek.

Derek

The award of the M.M was gazetted Oct 1916. Will forward evidence to CWGC which should see their record changed in due course.

M.M. is missing from the headstone since the stone uses the detail held by CWGC.

Thanks for that Jim, I can't find anything on the London Gazette back issues when I search Rolling Eyes

It's good to know his listing & headstone will reflect his gallantry award eventually.

And another I cannot find in the Gazette. John Buchanan 290671 in NA MIC search. War Return gives D.o.D as between 23-25 April 1917. Probably listed on Mossgreen war memorial, no gallantry awards can be seen by any entries on that memorial.

CWGC
BUCHANAN, J
Rank: Lance Corporal
Service No: 290671
Date of Death: 23/04/1917
Regiment/Service: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) 1st/7th Bn.
Grave Reference: II. B. 32.
Cemetery: BROWN'S COPSE CEMETERY, ROEUX

SNWM

Surname: BUCHANAN
Firstname: John
Service Number: 291671
Date Death: 25/04/1917
Decoration: M.M.
Place of birth: Cowdenbeath Fife
Other: 7th Bn.
SNWM roll: THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLANDERS)
Rank: L/Cpl

Is SNWM wrong in this case?

Derek.
