In St Clement's Churchyard at Footdee, Aberdeen there is a plain granite slab with a picture of his ship at top centre, on the wall which reads-
TO THE MEMORY OF/CAPTAIN WILLIAM JAMES ERSKINE/MASTER MARINER/KILLED DEC 9TH 1971 AGED 62/ESCAPING FROM MS MUSTALI/IN CHALNA RIVER EAST PAKISTAN DURING THE INDO-PAKISTAN WAR/AND TO HIS BROTHER DONALD CHIEF ENG, DIED & BURIED AT SEA/OFF SOUTH AFRICA CIRCA 1945/ERECTED BY HIS FAMILY/DONALD, DAVID & DEIRDRIE
This is a valid war memorial and is WMR number 5835. It is the only one | have come across for the Indo-Pakistan War.
I first found this about 5 years ago, but lost my notes at the time, so revisited while I was in the area, yesterday |
