Freuchie - Fife
The war memorial is a grey granite celtic cross on tapering pedestal with wheel-head and central boss. The face of the cross-head has celtic patterns carved in relief and the dedication and names of the WWII dead are listed on the face of the shaft. The names of the WWI dead are on a bronze tablet set into the face of the pedestal. The monument stands on the road junction in front of the hotel.

Should this be headed Freuchie?
UKNIWM 8524 is Freuchie War Memorial.
Situated at Lomond Hotel, High Street,Freuchie.
OS Map Ref 283 067.
Also, Falkland has this
"Falkland War Memorial Trust looks after the war memorial building in Falkland, sometimes known as the Burgh Lodge (and currently leased to Smart Cookies Childcare)." |

Hello,
My apologies to John and ADP, the heading was indeed wrong and I'm sorry I didn't notice this or John's posting before. |

I think that Thomas Collier, Scots Guards, on the Freuchie war memorial is actually 16271 Private Thomas Wilson Collier of the 13th Battalion, Royal Scots who was killed on 22 September 1918. He had been awarded the Military Medal.
Although born at Portmoak, Kinross, his parents, William and Mary Collier lived at Drums Farm, Freuchie and Thomas' wife Isabella Millie Anderson Collier lived in Auchtermuchty.
He is buried in Pernes British Cemetery, grave ref III C 5
He is listed on the memorial in Falkland Kirk and on the memorial, formerly in the Falkland War Memorial Institute, and now in Falkland Community Hall.

Mistakes in names and regiments have certainly been made on memorials before so it may be rhe case Thomas Collier's regiment is wrong. Is he listed ad Royal Scots on the other memorials?
Thanks

I have been unable to trace a Thomas Collier in the Scots Guards as a WW1 casualty.
Thomas Wilson Collier is listed on the Scottish National War Memorial web site and on the CWGC database as serving with the Royal Scots. In the CWGC cemetery register the Freuchie details are given.
I note that when the stone headstone was erected and his reads "The victory is ours because you died", his wife's address is given as Brackens, Okehampton, Devon.
The war memorials in Falkland do not list any regiments.

This is a interesting one
SNWM shows him as born at "Portmoak Kinross",
and he married Isabella Millie Anderson at Auchtermuchty in 1918.
However his MM award in the L/Gazette has 16271 Pte. T. W. Collier, R. Scots (New Zealand).
[25 January 1918 Supplement:30498 Page:1382]
I don't see a Medal Card for a Collier, Scots Guards but the card for Thomas W. Collier has 1st Bn. Royal Scots. _________________ Ken |

Ken
Thanks for the heads up on the New Zealand connection. It looks as if members of the Collier family emigrated there is 1915. However Soldiers that died in the Great War says that he enlisted in Edinburgh.
Thomas' Medal Index Card gives 2 May 1915 as the date of entry into a theatre of war and his battalion, 1st Royal Scots.
After a bit of research I have found T W Collier listed on the WW1 Memorial Wall in Timaru, South Canterbury, New Zealand. The database done by the South Canterbury Museum gives some details from the information on the CWGC site, but then writes "served with NZ armed forces?"

Cheers Mate and thanks for the link to the South Canterbury Museum.
I was able to check a man from the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial, John Hutchinson, a Rifleman with the NZ Rifle Brigade, who was a Mail-Coach Driver in Timaru.
Funny how one simple question can take you half-way round the World _________________ Ken |
