Posted the above to Terry@IFTC and received the following,

He is in SDGW and Medal Rolls. Initially he is marked as a deserter (which would disqualify him from CWGC) but the Roll is later marked 'Restored' suggesting that it was discovered that he had not deserted.
He has a DC and so I will get a copy.

Upon checking, I see that we bought his DC back in 2009 but did not proceed with the case. His name has an Alias entered in our records (SWEENEY) beside MURRAY.
It is possible that the DC will explain more but I will have to dig in the archive store for it as it was so long ago. There is obviously a story there.

I have dug out the DC and there is nothing unusual about it.
I think what happened back in 2009 is that we (I) thought that the details were too close to No.7851 (SWEENEY, John died same day in same unit) to be safe knowing the errors in the overseas DCs so he was not processed.
This was all before the SERs and Medal Rolls were available to the public online.
Now I can see that No.7851 is a separate man and so we can process this case now.
