CHURCH PLAQUES (INTERNAL)

INDIVIDUAL MEMORIALS (INTERNAL)

(Signalman lost on HMY Iolaire - 1919)

It is unlikely if there are any more individual memorials in the Outer Hebrides unless there are ones in South Uist and Barra which are predominantly Catholic. The other Protestant islands frown on church adornments in general and are very conservative.

Malcolm

Many thanks for this list. It confirms many of the entries we have already and adds a few others. It also explains the small number of church and individual memorials in the Western Isles compared to other parts of Scotland.

Regards

Adam

A brief note to say that there is a plaque at Holm where the road ends, leading to the path down to the rocks where the Iolaire Memorial is sited above the site of the 1919 tragedy - so there is in effect two memorials.

The road has a turning point where buses can turn (with difficulty).

Both the Plaque and the Memorial are photographed in the Project site but in case anyone gets confused this must be pointed out. Distance c300 yards on a chipped path downhill/uphill going back (naturally).

Wheelchair access with extreme difficulty. Needs at least two persons assisting.

There are no names on either plaque or memorial, much to my personal consternation, as I had a grandfather lost on the Beasts of Holm when the Iolaire foundered.
