PTE. DAVID CLARK, K.O.S.B.
David Clark – age 22 – Private (1182) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was an apprentice painter in Thornhill and a keen footballer playing outside-right with the local team. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was in the battalion's signalling section and was wounded on 12 July during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah. David died on the Hospital ship “Asturias” and was buried at sea.
Born 1893 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of the late James Brown Clark (died 1901) and of Susannah (Gowans) Clark (from 1906 Mrs William Wallace)
Died of Wounds/Buried at Sea on 22 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. DAVID J. COLTART, LANARKS. YEO.
David John Coltart – age 25 – Private (1107) 1/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
David was educated in Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire and had been employed for seven years as a grocer with his uncle David Kinnell in Thornhill when he enlisted in May 1915. He landed with his regiment, as dismounted troops, at Gallipoli in October 1915 and was killed a month later.
Born 1889 in Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Catherine (Kinnell) Coltart of Milton of Earlstown, Dalry and of 34 West Morton Street, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 17 November 1915 and buried in Pink Farm Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial and on the Dalry Parish War Memorial.


SERGT. JAMES COLTART, K.O.S.B.
James Coltart – age 32 – Sergeant (240934) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James had served his apprenticeship as a clogger with his father in Thornhill before being employed in Dumfries where he lived in Irvine Terrace, Lockerbie Road when he enlisted in the 2/5th KOSB in January 1915. He joined the 1/5th Battalion in Egypt as Sergeant (2865) and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1884 in Morton. Son of the late Agnes (Welsh) Coltart (died 1908) and of William Coltart of 49 North Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

Joseph Coltart – age 33 – Private (322117) Royal Army Medical Corps.
In 1901 Joseph was a railway clerk, living with his father and other siblings at 49 Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill. When he enlisted in October 1914, he was a booking clerk with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company, living at 40 Nithsdale Street, Strathbungo in Glasgow and he joined the 3rd Scottish General Military Hospital at Stobhill in Glasgow as Private (78A). He was posted as Private (169) to the 65th Lowland Division's 2/1st Casualty Clearing Station in May 1916 but when this second line division went to Ireland, he was posted to the 47th General Hospital which arrived at Le Havre in March 1917 to set up at Le Treport. Joseph was transferred to the 1/3rd Northumberland Field Ambulance in October 1917 and became a prisoner of war in May 1918. He was repatriated to Hull in December 1918 and demobilised in March 1919. He was officially discharged from the army in March 1920, by which time he had died of tuberculosis at the family home in Thornhill.
Born 1885 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of the late Agnes Dunbar (Welsh) Coltart (died 1908) and of William Coltart of 49 Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill who died there on 9 May 1919.
Husband of Helen (Sinclair) Coltart who he married on 1 February 1918 in Dumfries while he was serving with the 1/3rd Northumbrian Field Ambulance.
Died on Service on 14 June 1919 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery. (CWG)

PTE. ROBERT COLTART, SCOT. RIFLES.
Robert Coltart – age 27 – Private (29184) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Robert was working in the Buccleuch Stables in Thornhill when he enlisted.
Born 1890 in Morton. Son of Robert and Catherine (Hastings) Coltart of 4 West Morton Street, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 25 March 1918 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. ROBERT G. H. CORSON, R.S.F.
Robert George Hutchison Corson – age 18 – Private (63093) 4th (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Robert was on the staff at Thornhill Post Office when he enlisted. He had been in training for just two weeks when he contracted influenza which developed into pneumonia and he died in the Auxiliary Hospital in Dunfermline, Fife.
Born 1900 in Morton as Robert George Corson. Son of George Lorimer Corson and Annie Hutchison (Stewart) Corson of 147 North Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill.
Died on Service on 7 November 1918 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery. (CWG)

PTE. JAMES COWAN, K.O.S.B.
James Cowan – age 21 – Private (17398) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
In 1911 James, aged 16, was a pork butcher, living with his family at 10 Back Street. Thornhill. He enlisted in December 1914 and joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in August 1915 but was evacuated to hospital suffering from dysentery. He rejoined his battalion in France after they moved there in March 1916 but was transferred to the RSF two weeks before he was killed.
Born 1895 in Gorbals, Glasgow. Son of James and Willie Minnie (McClounie) Cowan of 10 Back Street Thornhill and of 74 North Shore Road, Troon, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

PTE. JAMES C. DALZIEL, K.O.S.B.
James Cook Dalziel – age 28 – Private (241634) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a grocer's assistant and living at Albert Road, Dalmuir, Dunbartonshire when he married in July 1915. He joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (5356) in 1916 and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1888 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of Archibald and Janet Marshall (Cook) Dalziel of 31 New Street, Thornhill. Husband of the late Mary Templeton Kirkwood (Browne) who he married in 1915 in Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire.
Mary died there in 1916 and his daughter Mary Eliza Browne Dalziel was born there in 1916.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


SERGT. WILLIAM FARROW, R.F.
William Farrow – age 29 – Lance Sergeant (14873) 25th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (Legion of Frontiersmen)
In 1911 William was a constable with the Metropolitan Police Force at the Police Station at 49-51 Union Grove, Clapham, London S.W. He enlisted in early 1915 and landed with his battalion at Mombasa in East Africa in May 1915.
Born 1888 in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late John Farrow and of Agnes (Docherty) Farrow of Gatelawbridge, Thornhill.
Died of Wounds on 25 October 1917 and buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial and on the Closeburn Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ALEXANDER FERGUSON, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Ferguson – age 21 – Private (29315) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander had served his apprenticeship as a watchmaker in Thornhill. He enlisted in June 1915 and was posted to his battalion in December 1916.
Born 1895 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of Alexander and Janet Smith (Wallace) Ferguson of Lady Street and of Downie's Wynd in Annan, and of Carronbank, Carronhridge, Thornhill.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Robert Fraser – age 25 – Sergeant (12691) 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.
Robert was a draper and in 1911 he was living in the drapery assistants dormitories at 7 Charterhouse Square in London. For some time previous to enlisting he was a traveller for the firm of Copestake, Moore, Crampton & Co. of London. He enlisted into the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry at St. Paul's Churchyard, London in September 1914 but did not go overseas until 1916.
Born 1891 in Morton. Son of William and Grace (Broadfoot) Fraser of 9 Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill. Husband of Annie R. (Woods) Fraser of "Kinnaird," Stokewood Road, Bournemouth, Hampshire who he married in early 1916 in Christchurch, Hampshire.
Died of Wounds on 23 April 1917 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. THOMAS GRAHAM, SCOT. RIFLES

Thomas Graham – age 32 – Private (40852) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Thomas was employed in the forestry department of the Buccleuch Estate at Carronfoot, Thornhill when he enlisted. He was posted as Private (22130) to the 6th King's Own Scottish Borderers in France but was transferred to the Scottish Rifles.
Born c.1885 in Closeburn. (Source:1891,1901 & 1911 census. SNWM has Morton but I cannot trace his birth)
In 1891 and 1901 he was boarding with Mrs Margaret Lorimer at 13 Back Street, Thornhill
In 1911 Thomas, aged 26 and a forester, was boarding with Mrs Elizabeth Menzies at 21 Back Street where she was a boarding house keeper. Elizabeth was at South Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill when she was officially notified of his death.
Missing in Action on 6 May 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


L/COPL. JAMES M. HANNAH, GORDONS.
James Murray Hannah – age 33 – Lance Corporal (S/11551) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
James was a shepherd at Mitchellslacks, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in February 1916. He was posted to 8th/10th Battalion in France in July 1916 and transferred to 1st Battalion. He was a member of the Lewis Gun Section when he was shot by a sniper near Monchy-le-Preux.
Born 1884 at Borland, Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Peter and Jane (McLellan) Hannah of Parton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Husband of Jeannie McKeand (Miller) Hannah of Gatelawbridge, Thornhill who he married in 1905 in Mochrum Parish, Wigtownshire.
Missing in Action on 16 June 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Parton Parish War Memorial, on an individual memorial in Parton Parish Church and on the Closeburn Parish War Memorial.

Robert John Harper – age 20 – Private (1180) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a grocer when he enlisted in the Territorial 5th KOSB in January 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 but contracted pneumonia while in training with the battalion at Tillicoultry in Clackmannanshire. He died in the 3rd Scottish General Military Hospital at Stobhill in Glasgow.
Born 1894 in Morton. Son of the late Margaret (Milner) Harper (died April 1914) and of Abraham Harper of North Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill.
Died on Service on 5 October 1914 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery. (CWG)

SISTER HELEN M. HASTINGS, T.F.N.S.
Helen Munsie Hastings – age 41 – Sister, Territorial Force Nursing Service.
In 1901 Helen was a nurse at Gartcosh Hospital near Glasgow and she was on the nursing staff at Glasgow Royal Infirmary when, as a member of the Territorials, she was mobilised in August 1914. Helen served in the 4th Scottish General Military Hospital at Stobhill in Glasgow throughout the war and died there from kidney failure.
Born 1878 in Morton. Daughter of the late Margaret (Kerr) Hastings (died 1912) and of John Hastings of Hillview and of 34 West Morton Street, Thornhill.
Died on Service on 23 July 1918 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery. (CWG)

James was employed in the grain trade in Lockerbie when he enlisted.
Born 1898 in Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Margaret (Smith) Hiddleston of Carronbank, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 22 June 1918 and buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery, Belgium.

John Smith Hiddleston – age 30 – Private (475422) 4th (University) Company, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.
John had been in Canada for nine years was a student at the Agricultural College of McGill University, Quebec when he enlisted at Guelph, Ontario in October 1915. He sailed from Canada in November and joined his unit in France in March 1916. John was killed three months later near Sanctuary Wood.
Born 1886 in Morton as John Smith. Son of Margaret (Smith) Hiddleston and step-son of James Hiddleston of Carronbank, Thornhill.
James and Maggie Smith married 1887 in Morton
Missing in Action on 2 June 1916 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Robert Dalziel Hiddleston – age 30 – Private (G/36733) Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) posted to 2/20th Battalion, London Regiment.
Robert was a motor car driver, employed by the posting-master in Thornhill when he enlisted in 1917. He was posted as Private (R/257629) to the Army Service Corps in France but was transferred to the West Kents and then attached to the London Regiment.
Born 1888 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire as Robert Samuel Dalziel Hiddleston.
Son of James and Margaret (Smith) Hiddleston of Carronbank, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 30 August 1918 and buried in H.A.C. Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein, France.

LIEUT. ROBERT W. HISLOP, SEAFORTHS.
Robert Wilson Hislop – age 32 – Lieutenant, 1/4th (Ross Highland) Battalion attached to 1/6th (Morayshire) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert had worked in a solicitors office in Thornhill before he emigrated to Ceylon. He returned from Colombo, where he was practicing law, to enlist and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 1/4th Seaforth Highlanders from the Inns of Court Officer Training Centre in April 1915. He went to France in July and was promoted to Lieutenant from 1 June 1916. He was invalided home on two occasions.
Born 1885 in Kelvin, Glasgow. In 1901 he was a scholar in Ayr .
Son of the late Susan Cruickshank (Wilson) Hislop (died 1914) and of the Rev. Robert Hislop of the Evangelical Union Manse in Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 4 July 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Thornhill Congregational Church memorial, now in the Parish Church, and on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. ARCHIBALD HUTCHINSON, K.O.S.B.

Archibald Hutchison – age 20 – Private (17396) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Archie was a grocer in Thornhill when he enlisted in December 1914. He joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in August 1915 and then served in Egypt before his battalion moved to France in March 1916. At some point he transferred to the 2nd KOSB.
Born 1896 in Morton. Son of the late Archibald Hutchison (died 1907) and of Margaret Hastings (Bayford) Hutchison of 10 West Morton Street, Thornhill.
Missing in Action on 3 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

PTE. WILLIAM KELLOCK, R.S.F.
William Kellock – age 22 – Private (15345) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William was employed at Longmyre Farm, Thornhill when he enlisted in November 1914. He was posted to the 6th RSF in 1916 and after his second wounding he was treated in hospital in France in May 1917. He was wounded again in December and died in the 10th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1895 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow. Son of John and Mary Jane (Thomson) Kellock of 12 Townhead Street, Thornhill who had married in 1886 in Morton.
In 1901 the family were in Dumfries and in 1911 were in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire.
Died of Wounds on 15 December 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

PTE. THOMAS B. J. LOGAN, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Brown Johnstone Logan – age 19 – Private (23323) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was employed at Shawsmuir Farm, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted. He was reported as missing but his remains were recovered from the battlefield after the war.
Born 1897 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of the late John Logan (died April 1916) and of Janet (Johnstone) Logan of 18 West Morton Street, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 3 September 1916 and buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Congregational Church memorial, now in the Parish Church, and on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. JAMES MARCHBANK, K.O.S.B.
James Marchbank – age 18 – Private (17395) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James joined his battalion in France in April 1915 but died just over a week later. He was reportedly the first local soldier from Thornhill to be killed in action.
Born 1897 in Morton. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Kerr) Marchbank of 8 New Street, Thornhill.
Died of Wounds on 6 May 1915 and buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension (Nord) France.
Also named on the Thornhill Congregational Church memorial, now in the Parish Church, and on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. ROBERT MATHER, CAMERONS.
Robert Mather – age 30 – Private (200905) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Robert was a farm servant at Kirkbog, Thornhill when he enlisted in April 1915. He joined his battalion in France in July 1916.
Born 1887 at Nithbank, Morton as Robert Lorimer Mather. Son of Amy Annie Mather of 33 High Street, Dumfries. He named his sister Annie as his legatee.
In 1891 he was living with his mother Amy and his grandmother Margaret Lorimer at Nithbank and in 1901 was with them, and his sister Annie, at Back Street, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 30 November 1917 and buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Fampoux, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

Note: his father was Alexander Walker Maxwell.
Alexander McNaught Maxwell – age 34 – Private (2021173) 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Alexander was working as a watchman for the V.P.R. Packing Co. in New Westminster, British Columbia when he was drafted for military service at Vancouver in January 1918. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in February, landed in France in June and joined his battalion in August but was killed six weeks later.
Born 1886 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of the late Alexander Walker Maxwell (died 1911) and of the late Agnes Harkness (Bryden) Maxwell (died 1899)
He named his sister Jane Dempster of Latimer Road, Cloverdale, B.C. as his next of kin and named his brother as James of Langley Prairie, B.C.
Killed in Action on 27 September 1918 and buried in Sains-Les-Marquion British Cemetery, France.


PTE. JOHN MITCHELL, K.O.S.B.
John Mitchell – age 25 – Private (22799) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was attached to the Royal Scots Fusiliers when he was killed during the battle of the Somme.
Born 1890 in Dumfries. Son of the late Mary (Wallace) Mitchell (died 1908) and of John Mitchell, and step-son of Elizabeth (Smith) Mitchell of Sandrain, Thornhill and of Burnbrae Cottages, Thornhill who had married in 1910 in Morton.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

Gilbert Black Mitchell – age 20 – Lance Corporal (36818) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Gilbert suffered multiple wounds from a shell on 29 October 1918 and was evacuated to the 1st South African General Hospital at Abbeville but whilst under treatment there he contracted influenza and pneumonia and died. Born 1898 in Irvine, Ayrshire. PTE. JOHN MOFFAT, SCOT. RIFLES.
John Moffat – age 29 – Private (201547) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John was living in Fairlie, Ayrshire when he enlisted and he joined his battalion in France as Private (195) in early 1916.
Born 1887 in Morton. Son of the late Joan (Farish) Moffat (died 1891) and of James Moffat, and step-son of Annie (Kennedy) Moffat of Station Cottage, Thornhill who had married in 1892 in Morton.
Missing in Action on 20 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. JOHN McARTHUR, CAMERONS.
John Renwick MacArthur – age 31 – Private (17944) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was a gamekeeper with the Duke of Buccleuch when he enlisted in April 1915. He sailed from Liverpool in August 1916 and joined his Battalion's machine gun section in Salonica on 3 September but was killed a month later.
Born 1885 in Hutton & Corrie, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Jane Macarthur, of Dryfe Lodge, Boreland, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.
Husband of Mary Ellen (Crawford) Macarthur of Laught, Blacknest and of High Fardingbank, Thornhill who he married in 1907 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action between 1 & 2 October 1916 and buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial, on the Hutton & Corrie Parish War Memorial in Boreland and on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


CORPL. JOHN McCLANE, K.O.S.B.
John McClane – age 24 – Corporal (1205) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John worked as a joiner with his father and played right-back for Thornhill Football Club when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1891 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of William Martin McClane and Agnes Gillespie (Gracie) McClane of 40 New Street, Thornhill.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

PTE. DONALD McDONALD, SCOT. RIFLES.
Donald McDonald – age 19 – Private (42347) Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Donald was educated at Annan Academy and was a medical student when he enlisted in July 1917. He was posted to the 9th Cameronians but was gassed in May 1918. He was discharged from the army and awarded a Silver War Badge (B3746) in September 1918. Donald died of tuberculosis in the family home at the Police Station in Thornhill.
Born 1899 in Dumfries. Son of Police Inspector George Brown McDonald and of Margaret (Don) McDonald of the Police Station Thornhill.
Died on 21 January 1919 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial, on the Annan Burgh War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.


LIEUT. JAMES McKENZIE, SEAFORTHS.
James Kinnell McKenzie – age 22 – Lieutenant, 10th Battalion attached to 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James was educated at Wallace Hall Academy in Thornhill before studying at Edinburgh University from where he graduated M.A. with Honours in 1914. He moved on to Trinity College, Cambridge in October 1914 and was commissioned from the Officer Training Corps in November. He went to France on 2 October 1915 but was killed at the end of the month.
Born 1892 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of Robert and Anna Dunlop (Kinnell) McKenzie of "Homelea," Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 30 October 1915 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. J. GEORGE McMILLAN, A.C.C.
Note: All military records use George. Civil records have John George.
George McMillan – age 20 – Private (1577) 15th Division Cyclist Company, Army Cyclist Corps.
George became a postman in January 1912 and was working at Thornhill Post Office when he enlisted as Private (4916) in the Gordon Highlanders. He transferred to the Cyclists before he went to France in July 1915 and came through the battle at Loos in September but he was killed a month later.
Born 1895 in Newington, Edinburgh as John George McMillan. Son of John and Mary Jane (Storie) McMillan of 105 South Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill.
Missing in Action on 29 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

John McNaught – age 19 – Private (39685) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John was employed as a draper in Thornhill when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in April 1918.
Born 1899 in Morton. Son of John and Marie Lizzie (Clifton) McNaught of Carronbridge, Thornhill who had married in 1898 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire.
Killed in Action on 22 September 1918 and buried in Targelle Ravine British Cemetery, Villers-Guislain, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.
His brother Joseph McNaught, age 39, Leading Aircraftman (1562096) No.1 R.A.F. Beach Unit, Royal Air Force was killed on D-day 6 June 1944 during the landings at Normandy and is named on the WW2 section of this memorial.


PTE. HUGH OSBORNE, SCOT. HORSE.
Hugh Osborne – age 27 – Private (225777) 10th (Lovat's Scouts) Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Hugh was working on his father's farm at Morton Mains near Thornhill when he enlisting as Private (1232) in the 3rd Scottish Horse Yeomanry in May 1915. Men from this unit were transferred to the Lovat's Scouts to help form the 10th Cameron Highlanders in Egypt in October 1916. They were posted to Salonica in Northern Greece before moving to France in June 1918. Hugh died of pneumonia in the 7th Canadian General Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1891 in Ochiltree, Ayrshire. Son of Robert and Nellie or Helen (Wardrop) Osborne of Morton Mains, Thornhill.
In 1901 the family were at Wynholm Farm, Hutton & Corrie Parish near Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire but by 1911 they were in Morton Parish.
Died on Active Service on 31 October 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial and on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


PTE. ANDREW PATTISON, K.O.S.B.
Note: All civil and military records have his name as Pattinson.
Andrew Pattinson – age 43 – Private (38358) 8th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
Andrew was employed by a builder in Thornhill when he enlisted. He joined the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers in France in June 1916 as Private (23221) but was transferred to the Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was wounded June 1917 and treated in hospital in Etaples but was killed three months later.
Born 1882 in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire. Son of Alexander and Annie (Burns) Pattinson of Burnbrae, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 17 September 1917 and buried in Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), Belgium.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

PTE. JAMES ROBERTSON, R.S.
James Robertson – age 24 – Private (20944) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James enlisted with John McCall Buchanan, Private (20941) – see above. They were mobilised in February 1916 and posted to the 1st RSF in France in June 1916 but were transferred to the 2nd RSF. Both were reported missing after the same action.
Born 1892 in Morton. Son of John and Margaret (Sharpe) Robertson of Carronbridge, Thornhill.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. JOHN ROUTLEDGE, K.O.S.B.
John Routledge – age 18 – Private (32563) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1899 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire as Robert John Richardson.
Son of Jane (Richardson) Routledge and step-son of William Routledge of Gatelawbridge, Thornhill who had married in 1901 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.
John's father William was a former regular soldier who re-enlisted in October 1914 in the KOSB Reserve. He was posted as Private (7673) to the 2nd KOSB in April 1915 but was gassed and evacuated to hospital in Southampton. He then was serving as Private (54217) with the 2/7th Northumberland Fusiliers at Port Sudan in November 1918.


PTE. THOMAS J. SCOBIE, SEAFORTHS.
Thomas James Scobie – age 33 – Private (S/16462) 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Thomas had been a house painter in Thornhill and in 1911 he was living with his wife and family at Dingle Bank Lodge, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
Born 1883 in Tradeston, Glasgow. Son of the late David Scobie of Glasgow (died 1890) and of the late Agnes (Brown) Scobie, from 1909 Mrs Alexander Shepherd (died 1915) of Burnhead, Thornhill.
Husband of Ada Mary Hope (Tippins) Scobie of 11 Rosemount, Oxton and of 296 Old Chester Road, Rock Ferry, Birkenhead, Cheshire who he married in 1906 in Toxteth Park, Lancashire.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Guemappe British Cemetery, Wancourt, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

John Semple – age 28 – Private (2096) 1/1st Battalion, Ayrshire Yeomanry.
John was a ploughman at Craigraploch, Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915 where they were attached to 52nd (Lowland) Division as dismounted troops.
Born 1888 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of the late William Semple and of Mary (Brown) Semple of New Street, Thornhill. Husband of Jeanie (Johnstone) Semple (later Mrs. Hannah of Crocketford) who he married in 1906 in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire.
Killed in Action on 28 December 1915 and buried in Pink Farm Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial and on the Rerrick Parish War Memorial in Dundrennan Village.


CORPL. HENRY SMITH, R.S.
Henry Smith – age 30 – Corporal (18917) 16th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Henry had served his apprenticeship with a solicitor in Thornhill. He was a cashier with a solicitor in Edinburgh and was living at Brunswick Street, Edinburgh when he enlisted in December 1914. He was connected to the Leith Amateur Football Association and had played for Queen's Park and Hibernians. Henry joined his battalion in January 1916 but was killed six months later on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
Born 1886 in Dundonald, Ayrshire. Son of Charles and Elizabeth (Davidson) Smith of 61 South Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill. Husband of Annie Jane (Pleasants) Smith of 89 Great Junction Street and of 4 Union Street, Leith, Edinburgh who he married in November 1915 in Leith South.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

Born 1889 in Dundonald, Ayrshire. Son of Charles and Elizabeth (Davidson) Smith of 61 South Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill. Husband of Mary (Messenger) Smith who he married in 1915 in Largs, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action on 26 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. THOMAS SMITH, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Smith – age 24 – Private (12651) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 suffered the effects of gas poisoning and was evacuated to the Lord Derby War Hospital in Warrington where he died.
Born 1891 in Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Thomas Smith (died 1912) and of Agnes (Johnstone) Smith of Carronbank, Thornhill.
Died on Service on 11 July 1915 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. THOMAS SMITH, H.L.I.
Thomas Smith – age 29 – Private (13956) 17th Battalion (3rd Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
Thomas was working as a packer with Jackson's Tea Stores in Glasgow when he enlisted in October 1915. He landed at Boulogne with the 15th Battalion (1st Glasgow) HLI in November 1915. He was wounded in May 1916 and evacuated to hospital in the UK. He returned to France but was wounded again and evacuated to hospital in Sheffield where he spent several months. Thomas returned to France again in March 1917 but was fatally wounded on 6 April and died in the 36th Casualty Clearing Station almost two weeks later.
Born 1886 in Kirkmichael, Dumfriesshire as Thomas Stewart Smith.
Son of Margaret (Smith) Kerr and step-son of David Kerr of Carronbridge, Thornhill who married in 1888 in Kirkmichael.
Died of Wounds on 18 April 1917 and buried in Cayeux Military Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. JAMES SWAN, K.O.S.B.
James Swan – age 31 – Private (12554) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a farm servant at Drumcork Farm, Thornhill when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1884 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire as James McDuff Swan.
Son of William and Mary (McDuff) Swan. He named his brother William as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.
