Name: MACPHERSON, WILLIAM W. S.
Initials: W W S
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Able Seaman
Regiment/Service: Royal Navy
Unit Text: H.M.M.T.B. 671
Age: 19
Date of Death: 24/04/1944
Service No: P/JX417851
Additional information: Son of George and Maggie Macpherson, of Airdrie.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Sec. 1. Grave 503.
Cemetery: NEW MONKLAND CEMETERY

SNWM:

Surname MacPHERSON
Firstname William Wilson Shorthouse
Service number P/JX417851
Date of death 24/04/1944
Place of birth Airdrie
SNWM roll ROYAL NAVY AND ROYAL MARINES
Rank A B
Theatre of death R.N. H.M.M.T.B.671. At Sea.

There is no mention of William McPherson on this family stone although this is the stone in Section 1, Grave 503. (The Section and Lair/Plot Number were confirmed by the staff at New Monkland Cemetery.) According to the Lair Books, there have been 4 burials in this Lair/Plot but who these people were, it is still unknown but it might have been the case that for some reason, the family didn't wish William's name to be added.

The names mentioned on the inscription, I believe are his Grandparents and the children would have been his cousins.

Note the different spellings of the surname. The inscription has McPHERSON, CWGC & SNWM both have MacPherson.

Name: McLANAGHAN

Nationality: United Kingdom

Unit Text: Depot
Age: 42
Date of Death: 27/05/1918

Additional information: Husband of Helen McLanaghan, of 64, Kippen St., Coatdyke, Airdrie.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

From their Marriage Certificate, David McLANAGHAN and Helen Donald were married at Calderbank on the 24th June 1898. They were both 22 years old.
David's occupation is listed as Ironworker and Helen's as Domestic Servant.

Also on their daughter Susan's Birth Certificate, the spelling is also McLANAGHAN

So on this occasion, CWGC have the correct spelling and the Monumental Mason got it wrong!

Airdrie Civic Memorial, (where he's listed as McLenachan/McLenaghan):
